"Not desirable" is a relative and strange judgment. Vinyl siding, although no longer inexpensive, is less expensive to both produce and install than wood, stucco or brick. It also requires much less upkeep over time, and therefore is less expensive to maintain. It also lasts a long time since it doesn't rot, dry out or crumble. So I can't imagine why it might be "not desirable" -- except in terms of an individual person's vanity. It is a very practical siding, and nowadays it's also attractive. I've lived in houses with all the above-mentioned sidings, and for all the reasons mentioned I prefer vinyl. Wood and brick are prettier, if pretty is more important than maintenance expense and effort.
Vinyl siding lasts for decades, and it's a heckuva lot better than having to paint wood siding every three years!

'Cats is right about vinyl being practical, and some of it does look fine, but there was a rash of poorly installed, ugly vinyl siding sold by hucksters over the phone. In recent years the quality of vinyl siding has improved by light years, but some people view it as not classy, like if you're buying a nice 1920's craftsman home, it should have wood siding..so vinyl is not always appropriate, but it's almost always nicer than the now less common aluminum siding.

Yes, Ira500 is right -- I didn't think of a situation like on a genuine Craftsman house. And it's not always appropriate, or maybe it's rarely appropriate, for the total look of many high-end houses, and those folks can afford to repaint wood siding whenever they want to.

Might wanna rent BLUE VINYL, a documentary, just for the "anti-vinyl siding" side of the story. And it's done with a quirky subjective POV (very personal quest), which perhaps not as objectively scientifically rigorous as some would want, yet managed to be entertaining in it's format and heart-breaking in its depiction of the casualties.
I don't know if that is the best representation of the "green" side of it, or even a sound representation of the facts, but I found it made me wanna stay away from vinyl siding. I guess that means it was persuasive as formatted.
