Seattle International Dance Festival is an explosion of dance and the arts both indoors and outdoors. June 9-22nd.

The festival began in 2006 after Cyrus Khambatta, Artistic Director for Khambatta Dance (formerly Phffft! Co.) attended an Artistic Director Leadership training program with a grant from The Paul G. Allen Foundation and began to realize a long, stirring desire to connect audiences with dance through the festival environment. After a decade in which his own Khambatta Dance (then Phffft! Co.) was invited to numerous international festivals, each with its own particular take on dance, he found the excitement and fervor with which audiences digested dance works to be a stimulating environment in which to create. After initiating a partnership with Seattle Center in 2007, the festival presented the site specific portion of its festival at the Center House for two years. In 2009, the festival applied and received a grant from the Department of Neighborhoods to revitalize South Lake Union (SLU) through the arts. This initiated an effort to connect to the SLU community, where it found a receptive environment in a growing urban community. This new neighborhood allowed the festival a larger, urban terrain with unique architectural features for its site specific events and access to a soon-to-be densely populated audience. In this same period, the festival initiated a partership with Cornish College of the Arts to bring concert performance, as well as a dance education and instruction program together in one locale. The festival has presented local, national, and international artists, including work from artists from 25 countries in the short time since its inception.

June 12-13 7:30pm. Based on a best-selling novel, Behold the Dreamers is “a story of class divide, immigration, and marriage” featuring a family from Cameroon at Center Theatre.

Jende and Neni Jonga have recently emigrated from Cameroon to America to try to make a new life for themselves and their young son. When the Great Recession starts to upend the economy, the Jongas begin to grasp the fragility of the American dream. Imbolo Mbue masterfully weaves a story of class divide, immigration, and marriage in her remarkable debut novel.

Behold the Dreamers is a New York Times bestseller, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and a pick for Oprah’s Book Club. Here's the link: https://book-it.org/events/behold-the-dreamers/

June 13-15. Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra performs Debussy, Wagner, and Strauss, including an oboe concerto at Benaroya Hall. Hold on to your hay cart — the fabled trickster Till Eulenspiegel is back at his merry pranks! Richard Strauss takes us on a wild ride with music’s most lovable troublemaker. The effervescent Oboe Concerto revisits Strauss 50 years later, after he befriended an American soldier and oboe virtuoso in Germany at the end of World War II. Seattle Symphony Principal Oboe Mary Lynch comes front and center for a fresh reading of this alluring showpiece. In Jeux, Debussy fleshes out a kinetic tableau of tennis and other flirtatious games. The radiant Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin shines the spotlight on Wagner and his explosive, futuristic approach to the orchestra that impacted both Strauss and Debussy so profoundly.
