Maybe you saw this in the 'Times the other day, or read something about "Save the Market Entrance":

That is completely misleading, as the building in question, the "Hahn" building, does not have and has not ever had anything to do with Pike Place Market.

Additionally, there is no "THE Market entrance", as anyone who has ever been there knows there are hundreds of entrances to this major tourist attraction.

The bottom line is that an old, beaten-up building which has no meaningful 'value' to the world around it will be torn down and replaced by a new, 14-story structure.

Admittedly it would be nice if the Green Tortoise Hostel can find still another location nearby for its purpose (not as easy in 2018 Seattle as in 2002 Seattle), but there has never been much else of use in that building. Not even Burger King could survive there in the mid-1980's.

Of course the building's notoriety and nostalgia worth includes the infamous doughnut shop of the 1970's and, more briefly, The Turf restaurant, but it is a modern day eyesore and the spot would be much improved upon with the addition of a new structure.

If the classless fools who live on the lower floors in the Newmark building who will lose their western views in part or in whole once the new building is up had merely stood-up for themselves years ago and stated honestly their (obvious) investment in the Hahn Building, then perhaps we as a society could pity their plight.

But the sickening and veiled effort to """" save the Market entrance """" (as IF it has anything to DO with the Pike Place Market) just serves to identify those condo owners as pathetic losers.

Don't buy into their hype.

Opinions will vary on this one.

Sure, of course condo owners are going to want to protect their views. But the way I see it, it's the kind of people without a vested interest in the condo views, who make efforts to perserve historic buildings in their cities - those kinds of people, that are part of why other cities have been able to maintain some semblance of their historical character intact.

Considering Seattle's track record of bulldozing large swaths of it's history in the name of "progress", and the fact that there were once efforts to get rid of the market itself, I think folks have good reason to worry about the character of the area/effects on Pike Place Market from this project.

Maybe the Hahn building isn't in the best of shape. But if it's going to be torn down, I would much rather see new housing built. This city could use that a lot more than another hotel.

It's a lot easier to get sympathy for a cause when using historical value rather than NIMBY (spoiled view). It doesn't matter, the City will see the potential tax revenue and approve it.

Just how will respectable opinions vary ???

The building has zero to do with PPM.

People were IN the Market the other day asking:

“Is this the building they’re threatening to tear down?”

And Seattle doesn’t have much history at all relative to other cities. The average graveyard in Mass. or NY has markers which dwarf by decades any history you think Seattle could or should have.

A new hotel, even if somehow bland, can’t represent any negative effect on the Market itself or on any entrance to it.

Besides, anyone so concerned had better first worry about any potential impact of the planned streetcar along First Avenue as this planned hotel is twice as far away from The Market as will be the streetcar.

With neither still having anything to do with The Market.
