Sorry to have missed that; I should've visited more often back then... but clearly there's still some strong social activism present, or Kshama Sawant wouldn't have been elected to City Council.

Good luck
I was in Shanghai over the summer and noticed the same exact thing. The subway was so quiet because everyone was glued to their cell phones.

That Seattle is not unique. What you find in Seattle, freeze-wise, you find in every large city in the world.

Having moved 32 times and lived in 12 different states, both East and West Coast, South, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, PNW, you couldn't be more wrong. Seattle (including Tacoma and Oly) has a very real social issue that's been around long before all the IT nerds invaded. It's very unique to this area and been covered ad nauseam.

And no, I'm not joining a hiking group

Real or not, I don't think comparing Seattle to Shanghai is very reassuring. In fact becoming more like Shanghai is the exact nightmare of many people here.

Very interesting post! I was raised in Seattle (OK Mercer Island …close enough) but lived in the PNW "before' the wild population and housing price increase. I have lived all over the world (Europe, Canada) and now am living in "dreamland-for-many San Diego. I believe it all boils down to what you want and what you are able to do. What you want as in culture or the beach scene? Seattle has the culture (I love that) and the skiing but if beer and beaches is your thing, well San D is maybe is perfect. BTW the perfect weather reputation here is a tiny bit off: while the temperatures allow to do a lot outdoors, there really is May grey, June gloom….and the winters are much colder than 80% of people may think: as in 40-50`s in the mornings from November to March. Again no rant here! Just saying.
“What someone is able to do” is strictly based on their financial situation. With a well-paid job in Seattle that allows breaks to Hawaii or... San Diego , that (lucky) person will probably love Seattle more than someone stuck paying nothing but rent and barely surviving. This goes for San Diego also (and MANY other larger or upcoming US cities ) where many have the dream to become homeowners but are unable to keep up with the HUGE real estate boom.. San Diego is notorious for extremely low salaries. Why ? Because so many wish to live the beach life. I found out the hard way after being offered a good job here and then seeing the company close 11 months later. We had to greatly adjust to the new job with a large pay cut.I can see this has happened in Seattle as people see the Seattle vibe and ( huge) beauty of this area and salaries are stable whereas house is crazy!!

I agree with a lot of what @yaya97 says plus I want to add that things like “Housing is crazy” are very very relative. Coming from NYC, it’s crazy what I can afford here compared to what I could afford there (while Seattle tech jobs are almost as abubdunat), which was one of the major points for us when choosing Seattle.

Eugene, I hear that as well from people relocating to Seattle from the Bay Area and Europe.
