I'm trying to remember a fish & chips take out that's on the wharf. They had alder smoked halibut and potato wedges as their fries. This was back in the late 70's and it was fantastic.

What's the name and is it still there?

Are you talking about Ivar's?

The Salmon Cooker at Pier 57...They've got alder smoked cod, salmon, and halibut, and big potato wedges as their fries. Not nearly as famous as their neighbor Ivar's, but it sounds like the place you might be asking about.

Definitely NOT Ivars! LOL
It was a walk away place, facing the main drag (I've been out of Seattle for 28 years, I forget the street).

Is the The Salmon Cooker still there?

I don't know, Ivar's is walkaway and known for their fish and chips.

I think I remember the Salmon Cooker.... I do think it's still there, but I might be thinking of another place.

Salmon Cooker is at Pier 57, a couple of Piers north of Ivar's closer to the Aquarium. Still there. It's a walkaway place but a few years ago they added some seating, but you still have to order from the counter, and stuff is still served on paper/cardboard plates. Not in the least bit fancy, and Ivar's clearly has better chowder, but their smoked fish is superb.

Maybe they expanded their menu, before it was strictly fish & chips with different types of fish. But after growing up in Seattle til I was 25, I know it wasn't Ivars!

I may have to try that. I haven't found anything in Seattle that compares to the great bread - bowls and otherwise - I got used to in San Francisco.

Hopefully you won't be too disappointed, I know I was. I don't know what it is, but the chowder bread-bowls in Seattle are not as good compared to those I've had in San Francisco. Don't get me wrong, they are good, but just not as good.

As I recall it was in San Francisco that this dish originated, maybe it's just something to do with eating a dish where it was first served...
