I just got a job in Tukwila and need a place to stay. I have been working 3 weeks from hotel rooms but this is eating most of the money I earn. I could afford a $1K to $1.5K apartment, but a lot of places seem very sketchy in the area. I look around at Renton and Kent but don't know how safe it is there. I understand that Bellevue, Redmond and Issaquah are high end, way out of my price range. Northern suburbs seem a little out of the way, as are Tacoma and vicinity. I can stomach a 45 min to 1.5 hour bus ride. Salary is in the 50k range but I'm by myself.

Tukwila is a fairly elongated city - are you working near the Tukwila International Boulevard Station/Sea-Tac, Tukwila Sounder-Amtrak Station/Southcenter Mall, or Boeing Field? Makes a difference in transportation options from different areas. When it comes to transportation around here, the devil is in the details.

In general, if single, I'd recommend living closer to Seattle, rather than farther away. Avoid Pacific Highway S.

Might be able to grab something small in Columbia City, wouldn't be a bad commute. Fun area, light rail access too.

There are places in Renton that are not that bad at all... Yes, they're some areas you want to stay away from but there more that are just fine... Yes, it's lower-end, but $50Ks a year in the Seattle area is just OK... Very livable, but not Bellevue "livable."

If you're OK with a studio for now, you can get into a newer/nicer building in renton without issue... Don't get cable, just learn to live with a powered TV antenna and the 20-30 channels you will get with it. That will save some serious money in the long run.

Good luck!!!!

Most of Renton is safe. There are a few parts that are less safe, but most of them are just fine.

There are numerous bridges and overpasses you can sleep under until you save enough cash for a ride which you then move into. Really, rents are just stupid and living in cars is getting more common.

I always recommend shared living for new comers. Its inexpensive, can be temporary, and if you can find the right one, a huge networking opportunity. You can certainly find something less than a motel room.
I am not familiar with Tukwila other than there is LINK, Amtrak, Sounder, bus service. (Amtrak will accept SoundTransit -Sounder fares, IIRC, you will need to check) .

Congratulations on your new job.
