I want it to be:

1. Small, just a 400-500 sqft apt/condo/house will do.

2. As inexpensive as possible; ideally under 150K.

3. Close to places where I can fish for salmon from shore, or pay to get on a boat to go catch salmon

4. Not too far from Seattle; say within 40 miles from downtown Seattle

What are some possible places to look?

40 miles would be really tough. You might find something rustic that price near Brinnon, Jefferson County.

I like to be able to do some fishing for quality fish. Seattle or the Puget Sound seems to offer that.

How about in the Columbia, Sandy, Willamette or Oregon's coastal rivers?

What about looking on the western side of Hood Canal? Their you also have the rivers feeding the canal from the Olympics. You might even be within that 40 miles if you go the way the crow flies or there is ferry service.

I wanted to be 40 miles from downtown because I want the option to go into town for urban convenience in about 30 minutes. Ferry probably would take a lot longer. But proximity to town is a minor point; mainly I am looking for salmon fishing, or fishing for other types of quality sea fish such as rock fish (the Sebastidae family). Just an example - I don't know if Puget Sound has rock fish.

So can you describe the fishing opportunity on the west side of Hood Canal?

Not going to happen a 30 minute drive from Seattle at anywhere close to that price point. Brinnon is a distinct possibility. If you can think of "going to town" being the 40 minute drive to charming Port Townsend, your equation could work. I would think that the fishing (and crabbing) around Brinnon would be very good.

You are nowhere near 30 minutes from Seattle at that price point. CrazyDonkey has posted some properties along Hood Canal.

Used to catch salmon, smelt, crab, and some good clam digging along the Canal. Don't know of rockfish.
It's a beautifully wooded area but very rural. There are a number of rivers that feed it including the Hamma Hamma, Dosiwallips, and Duckabush that salmon spawn to.

A beautiful drive north and you'll stop at the Straight of Juan De Fuca, an international destination for fishhing opportunities.
