I think they is some competition to get as many negatives into a measure as possible. Do you want to stop X, which prevents Y from not causing Z? I find it easiest to work backwards.

I am so happy you understand all the mixed messages and BS. I wish I could have consulted with you. Apparently, from my Googling, I am not the only person who didn't quite comprehend the whole package. I did read it through, and thought I grasped the content, but I guess I didn't.
I'm embarrassed enough as it is. You don't have to mock me.

This is a pretty good explanation:

I have to admit that for this election I had to do a lot of reading in the voter pamphlets.

I'm in my 40's now. When I was in trade school a friend of mine was applying for an airport security job and I thought he was very well qualified for the 2 positions that were open. When he was invited to the interview and to take some tests with the other finalist applicants. The hiring process was a "points system" of 70% test results (very simple obvious answers test), with the remaining 30% of the points being for only minorities and veterans. Not to be racist in the least, but because he was a plain white average Joe, the BEST he could do on the test was 70%. As there was an Indian, Asian, and a Black Veteran applicant, he simply shot his test into the trash for 2 points and left. During the same time frame, I was trying to get work with another large company and had a friend already there that thought I would really fit in well and meet a lot of their needs. Instead they apparently had a "quota" to meet and hired a minority and a person of "alternate orientation" that were poorly qualified for the position and also exercised poor work ethics as they knew they could get away with it. My understanding is that the passing of 88 would have reinstated this kind of thing giving preferential treatment to minority applicants and possibly quotas.

The wording on the initiative seemed a bit shady for me. What does it mean to "be a factor"? How is it not preferential treatment? The fact that it passed on the night of the final day of the session was also a bit dubious. It's all very nudge-nudge-wink-wink. To me, if you want to treat discrimination in hiring, fix it in those doing the hiring. Have a first-pass interview with a member of a group of people representative of the general population. Or have a diverse interview board meet the candidate and provide a recommendation for the second interview.

Agreed - this whole "it isn't preferences" argument is ridiculous. Of course it is preferences! What would be the point otherwise? I'm not against preferences, but I don't think people appreciate being lied to. There's a good argument for giving preferences - certain groups don't have the connections (which is honestly what it takes often times to get a start).

Dear Returning 2USA;
Did you come from France? Being self-deprecating is usually seen as a positive quality. Being too tightly wound has a tendency to alienate people. Yeah I messed up. Yeah I can joke about it, but that's my prerogative, not yours.

I do not come from France.

I was born in Western Washington into a working class town.

Cheers.
