Lots and lots of one-bedrooms, min. 500sf, are going for less than $1,300, especially in areas where most of the new construction has gone in (Capitol Hill, Lower Queen Anne, U-District, Fremont, Wallingford, Ballard). Also, plenty of two-bedrooms available for under $1,800. With many working-from-home and traffic-volumes way down, renters are no longer tied to paying higher rents to shorten their commutes or be where the action is.

Many companies are realizing that working-from-home is not just technologically feasible, but also economically advantageous, allowing them to trade paying for expensive "downtown" office-space for home-offices paid for by workers. Workers, on the other hand, increasingly gain the freedom to live where they want, rather than where they're forced to.

Seattle's history is one of booms and busts. Busts are important, because they help to keep rents reasonable. The hope is that, once the economy bounces back, working-from-home will remain as a significant trend, lessening demand for a now over-built supply of apartments in the urban core. Speculators lose their shirts.

October to March. I wish I could be in a coma in Seattle and not see all that gloom. There is hell to pay for all that green.

Weather and Mexican food are better in San Diego. Seattle is a pretty place, though, I'll agree to that.
Everything else is worse.

There is no upside to encouraging people to move here. Even the OP acknowledges the traffic. I saw a house recently that sold for $160K over list. We don’t have enough for all the people coming here. Also, many are culturally a bad fit as shown by many of the comments.

I've gotta say - having lived in the Seattle area for about 16 years now, that the winter/spring weather has really changed over the last few years. I don't find it nearly as depressing as a decade ago. When I initially moved here, there were weeks of rain and no sun, and I almost moved to LA. Now, I don't really notice it being all that bad. When I'm watching the ice storms in TX, tornados in the midwest/SE, and blizzards in the NE, it's just chill here. There might be a drizzle and its no Arizona for sure, but it keeps it fresh and green here. Maybe I'm too busy with work to care, but it really seems to be getting better (climate change?).

Re: the 'Seattle freeze'..... I just don't see it. I moved here with a group of friends so had a built-in social life, but over the years I've met some great lifelong friends both in Seattle proper and in the suburbs. A lot of them are transplants, but there is a fair number of native Seattleites too. People here are not as outgoing/blunt as other parts of the country but if you're a likeable person I can't imagine you won't find a good friend group.

Jobs here pay quite well. I think the Bay Area, Boston and DC are really the only other large metros that pay as well as here, and their cost of living is either at par or higher, so it's kind of a win/win (plus no income tax here).

I'd say give it a shot - may not be for you but you could end up loving it too. SeaTac has emerged as a pretty decent airline hub too so it's easy to grab a non-stop flight anywhere in the country for a weekend away.

Hope it works out! Electricians (all trades actually) are in huge demand here. Construction isn't slowing down even with the pandemic. People still want to move here despite everything else. I work in the homebuilding / real estate industry and we can't hire enough talent to keep up.

Hey OP!
You were trolling our Seattle forum last fall, dreading that you may be moving up here. I recall it got very tiresome.

This a short sighted view, the solution to traffic or high housing price is not to prevent people with new ideas and skills to move in here. It is to fix the underlying issues like expanding light rail and upzoning areas near Seattle city. There are way too many single/ two storied houses within few miles of downtown. We don't want to become another Detroit where people voluntarily stops moving..

The upcoming decades will be all about AI, Biotechnology and new forms of energy, people may dislike cities like Seattle, San Francisco, Boston etc. but at the end of the day those are the ones that is keeping US in competition with rest of the world. Many are extremely upset about homelessness and high real state prices in such forward leaning metros, but imagine a world where companies like Google, Tesla, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Airbnb, Uber, Pfizer, Moderna etc. were not established in US but in China or Europe. We would have been much worse off as a nation.

you take making a nice compliment and trying to just be friendly as picking someone up ? maybe you need to turn the news off and stop believing every straight white male is a rapist or sexual predator

if I was trying to "pick someone up" ( cringe at the term ) but I assume you mean meet someone and see where it goes , id probably pick a much more social and laid back environment and probably wouldn't approach someone who looks so closed off with a mask and hood on.

Anyway guys I just had a date from tinder take me to the olympic peninsula and I must say wow. I was in awe. Washington is just as gorgeous as I thought. Even the drive in was amazing. you can see the mountains peak out from the fog and overcast. The trees and the Olympic National forest was very pretty too. I dont think ive ever been in awe like that just looking at trees and woods.

I also went to alki beach both during the day and at night. Same thing with golden gods park.

Even the drive back into the city at night was beautiful , just wow. Im in love with this place and want to live here despite some of the down sides. Especially since I have family here.

Its just an outdoor paradise and I can make a lot more money than back in San Diego. CA is awesome to visit but living there .... its hard to get by even with good skills.

im gonna go the the pier and pikes place before I leave Tuesday. should be fun. any other recommendations guys ?

It’s NOT Pikes Place Market. That’s how you identify the outsiders.

"Golden Gods". I haven't heard that one before. But since you're enjoying, check out the UW campus. There's a rouse garden surrounding a fountain, there's a hidden glade (let's see if you can find it!), and it's just a nice campus to stroll through. Has a good anthropology museum at the main entrance, on 45th Ave. NE., the Burke Museum.

My favorite regional name error we've had on this forum is "Piglet Sound" (instead of Puget).
