Maybe I should just stay put - suffer through Midwest winters and no family, just so I can save money until retirement. Not ideal but visiting and vacationing may be the best way. I keep talking myself out of it because I KNOW how expensive it is - where I live now, I make extra payments on my mortgage most months because I can. I'm not bragging, this is a strange and cool place to be, so I wonder if I should put this particular dream to rest...
Im living in SoCal and lived in Seattle. Not sure which I prefer. And funny enough, I'm considering the midwest in a few years.

I was only in Seattle for one year, but I looooved the weather. Could've used more snow, but loved that it was never hot.

Looks like OP settled in DC? Loved my time there. Great 4 seasons and Georgetown is wonderful
Yes we closed on a home yesterday in DC just north of Georgetown (Tenleytown). It is a pretty area and is very walkable which is essential for my better half. It has a slight " Queen Anne flavor to it

I lived in a bunch of cities, NYC, Detroit, LA, Seattle, SF, Denver. The best city for me was the one with the most economic opportunity, which was NYC. Even though I was born in NYC and lived most of my life there, I retired to NJ because it's better value for my retirement dollars.

I was never fond of Seattle or it's weather. I lived in Issaquah and in Seattle for 1-1/2 years as a sophomore and junior in high school. I spent close to 10 years in SF and LA and preferred both to Seattle. In your shoes I would have picked Lake Tahoe as a vacation spot. I always felt like part of whatever city I was in at the time. I was formed by all of them.

It's funny that I have regretted some things I have done, but never regretted the things I chose not to do, because there's no way to know how they would have turned out.
The salary was not that much on paper lower (10K). For the story, we lived in a beautiful burb in the mid west and while we did appreciate it and that " amazing white brick house", the fact that we needed the car for everything was an issue and honestly we are urbanites who enjoy city living. Looking back I don`t think there was anyway for us to see what was going to happen. No regrets as what doesn`t kill me makes me stronger

You'd make a good shortstop OP. Stay frosty...

I may have missed something in the thread, but....why DC, OP? Why not go back to CA? Do you really think you could hack the DC weather, after being raised in Seattle and having lived a good while in CA?

Well, I guess the consolation prize is, that they don't have wildfires.... Or PG&E.

As mentioned, a job offer here.
The weather is not too bad at all. We lived in Quebec Canada so know what extreme weather looks like

A very pleasant part of the District, IIRC.

And you've got a Metro station there too. When I lived there, that station hadn't been built.

You couldn't predict Covid, but the homeless issue had been well publicized. See this documentary from March of 2019. It went to 1,000,000 views in a week or less, if I remember correctly. It's over 10M now.

I saw it before coming to Seattle. While not all homeless are like the ones portrayed in the documentary, the situation is very bad. I lived in corporate housing on 2nd street before moving to Lake Union and saw on a daily basis the homeless on 3rd is terribly sad.
