I’m looking for a general area to look for apartments in that would be a nice bike ride / bus etc to both university of Washington montlake location and harborview MC.
We were hoping to get an apartment that would have some sort of free street parking nearby too. My wife’s brother lives in a small 12 unit apartment in Ballard and it has tons of neighborhood parking and street parking within 200 yards.
Cap hill? Stevens? Eastlake? I was even thinking Wallingford and Fremont (UW being just to the east, and Harborview being south).

Opinions for someone who wants to bike at least half the year and I’ll be taking bus the other half.

I’m thinking East Capitol Hill, like 15th Ave E. or 23rd Ave E. Use E. John St. (roughly) as a cross street. That really would put you between the two and there are certainly quite a few apartments in those spots. Portage Bay, Wallingford and Eastlake would work too, but you’ld have some big hills to climb.

Here’s another idea, as there is light rail close to both of those locations you mentioned. You can take your bike on light rail, link here: https://www.soundtransit.org/ride-wi...ging-your-bike

Harborview is on First Hill which is pretty much 100% zoned parking, so you have to be a resident and have a city permit to park longer than a few hours. There may be a few streets that aren't zoned parking, but it's pretty tough to find a spot regularly.

Personally on a bike using the Montlake cut to access UW would be a no-go. Getting up 24th/23rd back up to the Cap Hill area is STEEP. If I were bike commuting to UW I'd use University Bridge and Harvard Avenue (which is also a fairly steep climb, just FYI, but much safer than 24rd/23rd from a bike-car interface...), which turns into 10th and then Broadway to get you down into the lower Cap Hill-First Hill-Harborview area.

With that commute in mind, I'd be looking around Volunteer Park, preferably on the west side of the park around 10th & Highland or 10th & Galer.

HomesinSeattle's point about light rail is also a good one. You could live up around Green Lake, which is a really great area of the city for outdoor recreation, and use the new Roosevelt light rail station to get to UW or to the Cap Hill station (10-15 minute bike ride to Harborview). Or on a lovely day, the Greenlake to UW bike ride wouldn't be bad at all.

I'd try something on 23rd (#48 Bus which runs from Husky Stadium/Udub Medical Transit-Link center to Mt Baker/Rainier-Link TC); or Central district (mostly on the Hill), Madrona & Leschi (warmer) if you can afford it. Beacon Hill isn't too bad also because you are already on the Hill.

North Beacon Hill, near the light rail station. 18 minutes to UW Station. Easy bike ride to Harborview or a 12-minute bus-ride on the #60. #36 trolleybus to Little Saigon, the International District, and Pioneer Square. Parking, no problemo. Groceries: Hilltop Red Apple, La Esperanza de la Seattle.

North Beacon is a good suggestion I think. I used to live there (around 19th & Horton) and it is truly an excellent neighborhood. TONS of cyclists. I'd stay north of Jefferson Park to maximize your commute options.

Would this area still be your suggestion if the majority of our shifts will be at UW montlake? We were thinking cap hill was closer / better or your green lake rosevelt suggestion

I guess that's up to your own commuting preference. If you want to be a little closer to work then Beacon Hill to UW is a fairly long commute, and the 12th Ave Bridge / Little Saigon area can be unsavory especially during the dark, if you're biking there.

If you're primarily at UW then honestly it would make sense to me to either 1) primarily count on the light rail to commute with ancillary bike trips, so Beacon Hill light rail (close to Harborview), Greenlake light rail, etc., or 2) look for a place on the Burke Gilman Trail which is the major bike trail and goes right by UW Med.

Or the unicorn, Burke access AND rail access ??? jk

I got 1 apartment by miller park, 1 in cap hill, and like 5 surrounding the Roosevelt station. I'm thinking the Burke might be a pipe dream for me since most people are telling me i do NOT want to bike the hill for harborview. Sounds way nicer to get off the rail at westlake station and walk / bike over lol.

Yeah. The hard part is balancing your dual locations with easy parking. That's a tough one, and that to me is why the Greenlake area makes a lot of sense for you. Quick access to Roosevelt station, easy parking unless you're living right in downtown Greenlake, decent bike ride to UW-Med.

Westlake Station to Harborview is also fairly uphill. I'd think you'd want to get off at the Cap Hill station and bike down Broadway or a neighborhood street to get down to Harborview.

Miller Park isn't bad, easy parking for sure, but there will be some hills. If you can visit beforehand, that's definitely a good idea to check out these spots for yourself.
