Leaving Austin for cooler temps, lots of trees, peace and quiet. Also want a quiet small town within an hour to 1.5 hours to Seattle. Any suggestions?

Would like hiking and biking trails close by. Lakes for kayaking and some kind of summer entertainment. Someone suggested La Conner?

There's peace and quiet like Morton, WA (way out there), or peace and quiet like Poulsbo (very much within greater Seattle's sphere). Hard to tell you which one you'd like better. Have you ever visited this area?

Nomad, what’s your budget and what other things do you like nearby? Looking for an area with more liberal or conservative minded folks nearby? I’m guessing the former as you are in groovy Austin. Port Townsend, Langley (on Whidbey Island), Cle Elum come to mind, perhaps Snohomish too.

Someone mentioned La Conner and Mt. Vernon are somewhat similar to The Berkshires? Liberal folks please!! Plan on sking, kayaking, hike and bike trails and a small town to seek some source of entertainment in the summer months. Trying to stay around 500,000. Schools are not an issue. No kids.

That’s a tough price point in this area, especially in liberal enclaves. Might be able to get into Mount Vernon in this price point, you should just know it has a solid conservative underbelly. Port Townsend, Langley (Whidbey island) or Vashon Island are quite liberal, would be great. It’s going to take a higher budget though. Take a look also at Historic North Everett too, not a small town but a small character neighborhood near Puget Sound.

Oops, thought you were just visiting...

So, house, townhouse, or condo? How many bedrooms? Assuming you are a couple (no kids):

Kayaking (Puget Sound), skiing (Mt. Baker, Steven's Pass), hiking (North Cascades NP, Mountain Loop Scenic Byway), all within reach. Ferry from Coupeville to Olympic NP. 1 1/2 hrs to Seattle. 2 hrs to Vancouver, BC.

When you get out of Seattle, rural areas are conservative, unlike the northeast. There's a strong urban-rural political divide in WA.
