You want to find people that can't laugh at themselves? Post a negative comment about Texas on the general board, see what happens.
There are humorless people all over. I've lived in four different states, really they are EVERYWHERE. I think that relying on any of these boards to get a feel for a place is dangerous because participation is a matter of self selection. Additionally, people that are engaging in the world certainly aren't spending hours on these boards. For instance, the days I have energy to get something done, I am not reading and responding to posts. Days where I cannot quite get it together to be productive, here I am.

There are those of us that also are connected to the web 24/7, at work and via Blackberry. City Data is certainly a productivity waster.
I know I'm one of those who complain about the weather on here. I do not stay inside because of it.....but I do enjoy it less outside when it is raining. I will never, ever be a "blue tarp camper"....even the dog looks miserable in that commercial.
And as far as being negative......I would say I am more disappointed. Yes, I knew about the weather here....it's well known everywhere. But, I truly never thought it would bother me as much as it does. It's not just the rain but the constant gray. And I think people moving here should realize that knowing about it and living it are two very different things.
I don't think anyone on here is being intentionally mean....some just find humor differently....just like the weather.

I have to say that I've been a "blue tarp camper" many times - though NEVER intentionally - and usually only for as long as it took me to realize the weather was not about clear up anytime soon.
I love that commercial. It strikes sooooooooo close to home and never fails to make me laugh (even if it IS a painful laugh).

Hey it's really no skin off my back if people want to be mean, it's not like I am personally insulted when people complain about the rain. I just don't really understand what it accomplishes, and it makes city-data seem like a dumping ground for people that want to chronicle their misery.
When they start attacking the people, which are my friends, family, coworkers....basically the people I live around and respect...Then it can feel a little more personal.
Crappy weather in Seattle? Surprise Surprise. I do find it funny when the rest of the country is sweltering in the heat, Seattle is like 55 degrees. I bet folks in Philly(it got up to 98 degrees over the weekend) would have loved to trade places with you guys. My seattle friends having been calling and crying about the weather this past week. So I tell them it was like that before you moved there and it'll be the same long after you're gone. That likes me moving to Houston and crying about the humidity. Oh wait, I do that...lol.
Bitter, party of one! Toughguy, no need to hop on your soapbox. Lighten up!! Make your day want only YOU can make it and be one with the wonderfulness that is the cosmic meditation known as the Pacific Northwest.

If climate is your number one criteria for where you want to live, then Seattle may not be your best option. If you are prone to SAD, you are probably in the wrong place. For those of us that either grew up with it or have the mental toughness to deal with it, it's not that big of a deal, and the many other positives of living in western Washington outweigh the somewhat irratating weather.
I can only speak for myself, but my guess is that the vast majority of people who have moved to Seattle, liked it - or didn't, at first, and then decided they had enough aren't the whiny, negative, SAD prone, mentally weak people that you are making them out to be.
You don't have to have climate as your first priority, plauged with SAD or mentally weak to be over something about an area. Weather affects people. All over. For all the people that are sick of the rain and clouds, there are the same in numbers complaining about the cold, or the snow, or the sun & heat. ALL of those people can't be climate obsessed mentally weak individuals.
I would even put it out there that most are probably just regular everyday people who haven't found "it" yet....
1. Climate was not my number one priority.
2. I don't have and never had SAD.
3. I am not native, but pretty darn close with family being in the area my entire life and spending many summers (and Holidays) there.
4. I don't just play a toughguy (or gal I guess) on the internet - I am actually pretty tough in real life too - so I wouldn't say that I just couldn't handle it.
So your analysis is off, or simply doesn't apply... either way, you are big on the "sweeping generalizations", Mr. Internet Expert.
I actually liked the weather the first few years I was there, and then... just like with the traffic, congestion, people, density, quality of life and cost of living... I got over it. There are some positives to living in the area, no doubt, but weather isn't the only negative.
I have to say that I've been a "blue tarp camper" many times - though NEVER intentionally - and usually only for as long as it took me to realize the weather was not about clear up anytime soon.

Funny. Everytime that commercial comes on I say to my husband....that can't possibly be fun. I would feel so damp and cold.....brrr. The food is soggy too.
Scary, though, my husband who is a southern city boy....is turning into the "sandals and socks guy". He gets mad everytime I laugh at him.....see it's just humor. And anyway, he still looks good to me.....very good.
I really take offense at the "mental toughness" statement.
I am one (or used to be) one of the most gregarious, TOUGH, hardnosed, career minded work horse you ever met...
Did I want to become depressed and have what felt like my entire life ripped from me? No! And because of my mental toughness ways I was in denail and thought I could just push through it - but guess what - the first thing that I needed to do to make it feel better was to ADMIT that I had depression - and that it was ok to seek help.
