Question Any suggestions for no kill shelters?

We need to rehome our cats. The previous tenants in our townhome had a dog that peed everywhere, and even though they ripped up the carpet, one of our cats poops on the floor and not his litter box. We know it's the previous dog, because he never did this before, and we've now moved him to the garage (because our son is about to start crawling), and he uses his litterbox in the garage. We've spent hundreds of dollars trying to "fix" the problem, but beyond moving (which we just can't do), there's nothing left for us to do.

It's heartbreaking, as we've had this cat for 6 years, and he's completely socialized and so loving, but my son is about to start crawling and we have a second baby on the way, and I can't be cleaning up cat poop twice a day.

If anyone knows of any place, please let me know. We tried the humane society, they wouldn't take him.

Thanks!

V. =)

The humane society turned us away. Maybe I'll try the ASPCA. Thanks.

I seem to remember reading something that Jenbar posted...I think she may have been involved in some sort of animal rescue operation. She might be able to point you in the right direction.

Most rescues won't take owner surrenders simply because they are over-filled and over-stressed with animals that they are literally savings hours before they are scheduled to die and don't look particularly kindly on those who dump their perfectly healthy animals with a home on to their rescue. Contrary to popular belief rescues are not just sitting around waiting and hoping owners will dump their responsibility off on them. I am not saying that is what you are, or are not doing, nor is that my opinion - but that is the opinion of many rescues, in my experience of working with them. They are pretty honest, they care about animals - not you. Some will let you place your cat on their site while you foster them in your home... but that doesn't sound like it will work for you.

Really, you can do this on your own. Post an ad on craigslist with a picture, ask a small rehoming fee, and ask for a home visit and references (one being a vet)... and follow up on those references. Don't require they must go together.

Thanks. We've tried 4 or 5 times on Craig's List. Unfortunately if no one will take him, it's having the vet euthanize him, or abandoning him outside, neither of which are options we really want to consider, but after a year, we're at our wits end.

'abandoning him outside', wow, you are not a nice person at all. Plus, you know that is illegal right?

There is no such thing as a no kill shelter, there are reduced kill shelters.

You have spent hundreds trying to fix the problem? Have you spent any time trying to fix the problem?

You should have never got any pets in the first place. Will you try to pawn off your child when it starts to to childish things?

If you have two cats, you need two litter boxes, you need to clean them atleast twice a day, as a cat will not go where its filthy.
Do you clean them? If you use scoopable litter boxes, you still have to clean and empty them.

Clean the carpets, change the carpets AND padding AND paint stain blocker like kilz on the floor boards before putting any floor covering back down.
Have you done this? I had to do this with our house.

Be nice to animals, Karma . . . its real.

First of all, we wouldn't really abandon him outside. I was trying to illustrate the point of how desperate we are.

Second of all, we have 4 litter boxes, they are scooped daily and completely changed weekly. We don't use clumping litter, it is bad for male cats.

We can't change the carpet - we rent, we have no ability to make any sweeping changes to the house. They changed the carpet before we moved in. We can't make any changes to the place ourselves.

We've had our cats for 6 years, they are part of the family, but guess what? My son's health comes first.

mod cut: inappropriate
You have no idea what we've been through, or what we're going through because we've had to make this decision.

VeronikaW, my family had an emergency situation where we had to find a home for our two older dogs. We located an older dog adoption agency and they found an amazing match where a woman's two older dogs of the same breed as our dogs had passed away and she was heartbroken and looking to adopt two more dogs. My dogs lived their final years with her.

Maybe you could find the same sort of thing for your cats? Something like PurrfectPals?

Thanks, we've contacted them, and are waiting for a call back. Unfortunately most of these places are telling us that they won't take a behavioral soiler. It's rather upsetting. We just want to find them a good home. My husband and I risked our lives saving them from an apartment fire (started by our neighbors) 2 years ago, so when someone tries to tell me I don't care about my cats it pisses me off to no end. I cannot let my son crawl in cat poop, and I can't clean up cat poop being pregnant again, and we don't have disposable income to just pick up and move. It's heartbreaking for us.
