Why is no one mentioning Vashon? Very small town feel, with a strong anti-growth politically-active population. And a ferry ride away from the city.

Reading all of these posts have made me homesick. I now live in central Georgia, by way of my husband's job. He's disability retired so maybe we'll make a trip to see WA again (by train), can't afford to buy a house there anymore : ( Our boys attended Vinland elem. in Poulsbo.

How about Duvall or Sultan or Leavenworth? Serious seasons! I live in Snohomish and love it though it is getting bigger, still close in. Cashmere? Blessings!
Those island towns ar pretty nice. Might look around some more.

It has been awhile since I have, but I cant imagine the area has changed too much especially just outside the "town"...

Basically I would move anywhere Ira500 tells you too....he is usually spot on.

I'm in Redmond and it takes me longer than 30 minutes to get to downtown Bellevue, 45 to Issaquah, unless there's no traffic out.

Lights are killer.

Carnation, Duvall, Fall City or even the outskirts of North Bend..

Sorry living in Tokyo now and 6000 people are on the street corners in Shibuya every 2 minutes!

Good Luck though....I hope you find a place that fits.

North Bend is a good one. Way out there with some scenery, but you have a little shopping and you're on the I-90 corridor, which will get you into Seattle faster than 520.

If you consider Olympia a Big City, then you might check out Shelton (Belfair is awesome but 45-60 min from Olympia). Very beautiful, close to the water and I believe they are smaller than Poulsbo but I may be giving you misinformation. I moved to Port Orchard from AZ Nov '07 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it here. Feels very small town, with larger cities nearby and Seattle only a ferry-ride away for the Aquarium, Science Center and anything only found in a large city. I don't think Port Orchard is quite as small as you are hoping though. I always thought Poulsbo was just beautiful and serene.

Good Luck!
