What is an eligble or a good reason for relocation
Hi,
I need advice. I am thinking about moving from MPLS, MN to Seattle for a nursing job. I have been called for an interview. I'm currently in MN and I have to travel to Seattle to do the interview in person.
Here is my dilemma:
- I'm nervous about the interview, especially if they ask me my reason for the move to Seattle. My personal reason is that I have not been able to get a job here. I recently graduated from collage and have no experience yet. I have applied to several hospitals and have not been lucky to even get interview. My second reason for the move is that I want to be on own, am single and have no kids or responsibilities to anyone but myself. Third reason is I hate the winters in MN and dont want here for another.
Are these eligible reasons to tell a potential employer?
What are the good reasons to relocate for a job?
Ps. I dont know a soul in Seattle and am terrified to not make it. The job is in the University district.
Does anyone know of a cheap motel that I stay at when I go there for the interview?
It would be too costly to rent a car (I'm only 22 y.o) and I'm terrible with directions. So I was thinking to take public transportation, what is an average fare rate?
thank you for any comment, answer or insight

Sophia26,
I would research the company, learn all I could about it. During the interview I would tell the interviewers what I liked about the company and try to give specific details. Say that you think it is a great company to work with and moving to Seattle is no problem for the opportunity to work there; assuming the above is all true, or at least mostly or potentially true.
You did mention looking for a cheap motel, did this company offer to fly you to Seattle for the interview? Usually this includes lodging and transportation while you’re there for the interview. I am engineering, not nursing so things may be different, but I would expect the company to pay for these things on an out of state employment interview.
Best of luck to you.

Metro Transit fares are 1.50 during off peak hours, and either 1.75 or 2.25 depending on how far you're going during peak hours.
Tell them you've heard so much about how great their hospital is, and don't want to pass up this opportunity...you don't want to leave Minnesota, but it's not everyday you get a chance to work at such a great hospital in such a great city.

Hello! both my girlfriend and myself have had interviews in Seattle and neither have asked why we want to move. Actually, my girlfriend had a few different interviews from the same company from different people and no one asked why she was moving. She was really afraid too. No worries. Just be honest. Change of pace. Different environment. New life. You can also mention that the prospectives where you have been are limited. You are looking for more opportunity.
I am not sure about the transportation because we have not moved there either, but we only know 2 people in that area. My girlfriend got excited when she saw your post. She is terrified because we really don't know anyone either. Let's become friends. I am 30 and she is turning 25. New friends are always good - especially in a new area.
Sorry we don't have any other advice. But we have found everyone on this site to be very helpful in answering our questions. Good Luck and hope to hear from you!

Stay at a hotel in the U-District and you can walk to the interview:
Seattle University District Hotels and Motels
I'd recommend the University Inn, by the way. It's right in the heart of the U-District and you can no doubt walk to this interview.
Just an FYI: summer is festival season in Seattle, which means that there is a higher demand for hotel rooms. You might want to call these hotels now to see if rooms are still available. You don't want to come out here at the last minute and find that all of the rooms are taken.
I would recommend being honest about your desire to put your college-honed skills to use. Employers appreciate candor, I think.
PS -- If you don't have Google Maps on your phone now, it's time to get it. You'll never be lost again!

Ask for a phone interview or teleconference (which you can do at your local kinkos or university). I've been applying to state jobs, and they've been letting me do that.
As for relocation, I've been asked that. I just say there's more job opportunities for myself and my husband there, and that seems good enough.

Yeah, you can't go wrong flattering someone's choice of place to live (unless you're on this forum!). Why move here? It's a beautiful place, you're young and have the energy to enjoy it now; of all the places in the country, this is the one you want to call home. That's almost a softball question really. I think you (interviewer) made a spectacular life choice in calling Seattle home and I hope to be just like you. (Obviously that's over the top, but that's the general idea).
You say you hate the winters in MN? I hope you hate them because they are bitterly cold and snowy? Lot of people hate the winters here, too, but they are not snowy or bitterly cold at all. Lots of overcast days with damp weather, a few snowy days, scattered beautiful sunny (but short!) days. Because it's often cloudy with less than 8 hours of daylight by the time you get to December, a lot of people have a hard time with winter here.

cost of living is less
standard of living is better
better opportunities
health reasons (you could say that Dr. recommended a much more drier environment since MN is more humid)
you are following your significant other to the area

All good advice. Just don't say it's because you can't get a job in MN.

As far as cheap motel, nothing beats the prices of the College Inn, a couple of blocks off campus.
