News, University District students forced to turn to food banks.
SEATTLE - Just blocks from the University of Washington, a line of people shuffle toward a food pantry, awaiting handouts such as milk and bread.
For years, the small University District pantry has offered help to the working poor and single parents in this neighborhood of campus rentals. Now rising food prices are bringing another group: Struggling college students.
"A lot of students can't call their mom every day to ask for that extra fifty dollars," said Capleton, 24. "They're on their own."

lol@ rachel ray
milk and bread costs about $8 and lasts about 2 weeks. what the story is really hiding is that they are running out of beer and party money.
nice how they prioritize their needs

I live in the U district and survive on less the 10 bucks a day for food, gotta find the cheap places. I have no sympathy for anybody who can't manage 50 bucks a day and are taking food from those who truly need it.

Maybe they shouldn't vote for a light rail system that they will be able to use before they retire? But they will . .

I always wonder how many of these food bank people are really in "need." I'm all for people who truly are in need but some of those people have nicer clothes, cars, etc than many people who don't use foodbanks. And 50 bucks a day? Give me a break. I can eat on that a week. 5 dollar pho is a beautiful thing!

$50 a day on food? It's "extra" too, so that implies they spend even more than that.

read the story, she did not say she would be asking for $50 a day. She said something to the effect that it's not like we can call our parents everyday and ask for an extra fifty bucks. Her point was that some students don't have parents they can call (I happened to be one of those students way back when but since I worked in restaurants was always fed).

yah...right!
I had a room mate who was always a few bucks short when it came time to buy groceries or pay the bills. He even borrowed allergy medicine from me (which I gave because I know how bad it can be) but he always seemed to have money for beer and pot! It really ticked me off when he told us he was encouraged by a counselor at school to apply for food stamps.
It's a safety net people! Not a HAMMOCK!
