It depends on how much experience your husband has. If that is being paid for a mid or senior level, then it's low. Honestly, on 80K for a family of three, if you want to own a home, it will be a struggle. We are a family of three, bought our home seven years ago when the market was more reasonable, gross about 20% more than that and have been unable to put away anything more than 10% into a 401K. We don't go on vacation, we pack lunches, we only eat out once a week, and we are not big shoppers. I cannot tell you the last time we went to a movie. We have no car payment and no credit card bills. The cost of living here can be crippling if you are not making substantially more than what they have offered your husband.

I wish, wish, wish we had gone on a house hunting trip before we made the decision to move back here. We owned a beautiful home 10 miles south of downtown Austin TX when we made the choice to relocate. I had no idea how expensive it had gotten here in the time we'd been away. After we moved and I started working with a realtor, I realized we would never be able to have the same kind of home we'd lived in before (and it was a "starter" home in TX) We ended up spending 100k more than we spent on our home down there, and we now have a 1940s rambler that needs at least 100K in work to make a decent home.

I have a friend in Auburn that bought a home for 180K. She wants to sell it, but can't find a buyer. I took a look at her home and thought to myself "My god, that house needs like 80K worth of work done to it." The front porch was FALLING OFF for God's sake.

Oh well, she bought it as a "fixer upper."
