Is it really pronounced "gooey-duck"? And if so, why?

They can usually be bought fresh at the Pike Place Market. Many Asian restaurants in the area serve them as they are considered a delicacy in many parts of Asia.

Yes, it is pronounced "gooey-duck". The name geoduck is of Lushootseed, (Native American) derivation.

Does it really taste like overcooked clams, that is to say like pencil erasers?

It doesn't taste like overcooked clams or pencil erasers though it might if you overcooked it. I've only eaten them in a clam chowder, and they were very good, maybe even a bit more tender than regular clams.

I've tried it in a hot pot place in Vancouver. In the broth it tasted fine as long as you don't overcook it b/c then it will get tough. I also tried it raw and it is very briny. Not bad either way. So many ways to cook it though so your experience will definitely vary.
