I remember pointing out "Mt. Rainier" to my wife while we were on an Alaska Air flight, heading south to the Bay Area. The apparently knowledgable person sitting next to us said that it was actually Mt. Adams.

What I meant about seeing Mt St Helens was how you see it driving toward Portland. Driving south on 5 through Tacoma, Rainier is in-your-face, very close, can't miss it. So, I wasn't comparing it to Rainier at all. Just to the way Mt St Helens appears, suddenly, and is large on the horizon, but not right near the main road. (At least the one time I've seen it, that's how it felt to me).

Mt Adams... I googled it looking for exact location (30 mi east of Mt St Helens) and found this: Air travelers flying the busy routes above the area sometimes confuse Mt. Adams with nearby Mt. Rainier, which has a similar flat-topped shape. So, Michael, you're not alone.

So, it could still be Mt Baker or Glacier Peak.

If the mountain is over the north end of the lake and it has a flat top, that is Baker. If the mountain is ahead of you and over Kirkland, it is Glacier Peak.

It is indeed Mt Baker after all. Just looks different from the south than it does from the west.. We got up into the space needle today (what a perfect day for it!). Driving over the lake (there on 520 and back on 90) we could even see it clearly, both ways. Stunning day for mountain viewing.

Sometimes I just can't believe how HUGE Rainier and Baker are.
