What kind of neighborhood are you looking for? Do you want peace and quiet or do you want to be in the middle of the loony bin?

Queen Anne is probably your best bet if you want to stay close to downtown. The further up the hill you go, the quieter it gets. Nearby Magnolia is VERY safe, quiet, etc, but a little less convenient and not much to do there.
