Default Govt jobs?

I am interested in Govt (DOD, State) jobs - are they plentiful in the area?
I have looked at the Fed Jobs site, but curious what local folks opinions are.

I have heard a bit lately of hiring freezes and cutbacks for government employees.

currently a hiring freeze at the state level and competition for city and county jobs is usually pretty intense (we have a lot of idealist living in these parts that would like to work for the gov)

Government hiring usually starts strong after October 1 when the new budget kicks in. With a new president taking over in January get ready for hiring freezes that could tie things up for a year.

It is often easier to get a government job once you are employed by the government. It is not uncommon for a highly qualified person to accept a job way under their education just to get civil service status. That way it is easier for an agency or another agency to transfer that position.

Transportation Security Administration has a high turnover among airport screeners so I suspect there are openings there. McChord AFB and Fort Lewis are going through expansions so they will be hiring civilians. Any job carrying a gun will pay more, but will probably involve odd shifts and odd days off.

Government pay is generally lower than the market, but there are annual increases and the benefits are adequate.
