Picking up and moving to Seattle
I don't have a specific question, but I'm so psyched to share the news on this forum...after toying with the idea for many months, I've decided that in December, I'm picking up from New York City and moving to Seattle!
I'm 24 and have no real attachments here, besides friends and family, but I know this is the right thing to do. I'm planning to sell all my stuff here and then find a sublet for a little while at first. Eventually get to know the city and get settled. And the great thing is, I have NY friends who are from Seattle, and one who has some job connections, so I should have at least something temporary when I get there.
Then, I have all sorts of work and school plans I won't bore anyone with!
But has anyone else made a move like this? What was their experience?
I'm nervous, of course, but I the decision feels so organically right that I'm more excited than anything!

Hi, and welcome. I'm glad you're happy about the new road you've chosen to take. I moved here, sight unseen, over 20 years ago and every day I love it! I spent my first 30 years in NYC, so I understand your situation.
Have you read this thread? http://www.city-data.com/forum/seatt...g-seattle.html
It contains lots of really helpful information.
Folks don't sublet here. But you can find short-term lease rentals. This is the combined classifieds of the two leading newspapers tht cover a very wide area in and around Seattle. Click on a place in the little map to drill down to smaller areas and neighborhoods:
NWapartments: Seattle apartment rentals, house rental listings, rental classifieds and other property rentals in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue and other Washington areas, cities and neighborhoods
The Seattle Weekly might also help:
Seattle Classifieds
The Stranger:
classifieds.thestranger.com | seattle classifieds, employment, rentals, buy sell trade, musicians, escorts
Craigslist: craigslist: seattle-tacoma classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events
Just remember never to send anyone money until and unless you can verify their existence and the veracity of their ad. Craigslist scams surface almost every week.
And there are rent.com, forrent.com, apartments.com
And you have lots of money to last you at least six months? What else do you want to know? Enjoy the excitement of planning for the new life you've chosen!

Allforcats, tried to rep you but it wouldn't let me.
Just wanted to thank you for giving out helpful information to the same kinds of questions asked over and over and over again--with a smile in your post.
By golly you're a real sweetie.

You nice funny lady! (smile deliberately inserted in post). Most times when I try to rep YOU I get that same refrain...
Some questions repeated endlessly are things people really need to know. Others... well sometimes they just seem to be picking a fight. So is it the open, friendly tone that makes the difference?

You'll do fine: look, you're already using the term 'organic'. You're a native!

+1 have fun with it. You don't get to do it too often either.
Plus, you'll have plenty of first-hand experience at starting in a new area if it doesn't work out, so don't sweat it (but do have a good chunk of cash on hand before you sell all your stuff there).

If it feels right, it probably is. I feel that way about leaving Seattle and going...somewhere else that I haven't decided on yet!

I am in the exact same boat as the TC. I'm in Colorado now, packed all my belongings into my Subaru and I'm ready to get to driving. I don't know a person there (Seattle), some connections, but no friends. I dont have a place to stay, nor do I have a job. I have a BA in Business and Accounting with a adventurous side. I want to keep my passions with me, mountain biking and snowboarding, but keep the big city feel too. I think Seattle will be great. I just don't know what district to live in. Capitol Hill, University, etc... Any help with that would be great. I would like to be close enough to jobs to bike, but that is not necessary...
I'll go check out some of the other threads since it looks like there is no shortage of Seattle topics...

Periphrasis------!!!
I'm doing the exact same move, but in Reverse!!!
I'm headed from Seattle, to NYC ASAP, probably by November.
And like you, I just know its the right thing to do. Nobody should live in the same city their whole lives IMO.
I'm 26, have no attachments in Seattle (Besides Fam & Friends like you said)..and I got a great connect in NYC that gonna get me hooked in....Plus I got good friends out there...and school too! I want to go there and finish my degree
What I love about moving to NYC, is probably the same as what you love about moving to Seattle.....Which is COMPLETE CHANGE. Two very different places, with different things to offer.
Well, good luck....We're switching lives, lol!

It will be a good move for you. I don't know if money is a concern or not but why not wait one more month so you can have your income tax money to help you. It will be your last year filing for those.
