I am moving to the Seattle area to work at the airport. I am looking for some suggestions of a nice area to live that would be near the airport, trying to avoid a commute. Also any help on what the traffic is like going to the airport?

Don't know whether you're planning to rent an apartment, or house, or buy a house, but...a couple of places quite close to the airport that are pretty nice are Normandy Park, and parts of Renton...Renton has great and fast public transit to the airport, and the downtown Renton area has a bunch of nice, new apartment buildings. If you have school age children, the Renton school district is not very good...Normandy Park is pretty and has a Trader Joe's....Parts of Burien are pretty nice, and Burien is also experiencing revitalization, but I'd avoid that part of Burien east of Ambaum Blvd ( a little scuzzy) and north of 140th...Parts of Des Moines are also quite nice, especially the old downtown area near the water...I'd avoid anything immediately east of the airport near or on International Blvd( Pacific Hwy South)...Traffic to the airport can be bad, but there are public transit options and numerous back road routes which avoid the traffic.

I don't think there is a "nice" neighborhood within 20 miles of the airport in any direction

Do you have kids? Or just you?

I really wouldn't live anywhere near the airport

Mercer Island with it's million dollar homes is less than 20 miles to Sea-Tac airport. Bellevue is less than 20 miles to Sea-Tac, as is Leschi, Madrona, Madison Park, and Alli, all in Seattle, all nice neighborhoods..
And while there certainly are more bad neighborhoods and more bad school districts nearer the airport, and while I also wouldn't want to live "right" near the airport because that's a bad area, there are a bunch of pretty nice areas within a 15-20 minute bus ride or drive to the airport.

I don't have any children, it's just myself. I am planning on renting a room for the time being.

I think that the aforementioned Burien, Des Moines, Renton and Normandy Park all make sense, although you'll need to be selective, especially for the first three.

Not sure about about flight-path noise, but I would guess that SeaTac and Tukwila would get a lot of it.

I live in the Seward Park area (have for 22 years ) - it's a gem of a neighborhood. 20 minutes from Sea/Tac with absolutely zero airport noise!
