hi, i'm asian-american born in hawaii and relocated when i was 12 to issaquah, washington. the first time i ever caught a bus to school a kid yelled out the window "hurry up you stupid *****!" through middle school and high school, i could count the # of minorities on my hands and feet and for once in my life i felt like a minority, and i really struggled with it.
UW is such a huge campus and very diverse. I believe they have african-american sororities/fraternities and I am sure they have interest groups that will make you feel more at home (I know they have one of the biggest Hawaii clubs!). my first year at UW i was President of McMahon Hall. My dormmates were randomly assigned and made up of 6 caucasians and my roommate who also happened to be asian but we didn't "plan" it that way. My caucasian roommates sometimes made comments that I thought were rude about how we studied or what our food smelled or looked like, but I feel like most of that was innocent and not intended to make me feel bad. the first friends i made were black, asian, indian, and caucasian.
seattle is densely populated with caucasians, well washington is in general, but i think seattle is a pretty liberal and "arms-open-wide" city. i say if you don't have a problem, no one else will.
every now and then you hear something said out of ignorance and you just learn to roll your eyes and get over it, but i think that goes for anywhere on this good place we call earth

Yes it is true.
Lived in Seattle for a year. The name of the county is King County which actually means Dr. King County as you will see from any bus or letterhead you receive from the city. Black population is small but potent. African is more potent such as West African, Ethiopian, and Somali. Central District is the black and African neighborhood. I now live in San Diego, but race relations in Seattle are better. Here in San Diego, people hate their own race, in other words, people try to 'stereotypically' act like what they assume is black. And blacks sometimes do the same acting white. In Seattle, people love their own culture while at the same time loving their own. As far as Middle Class is concerned, Seattle is a very cheap city to live in as for as rent is concerned. Middle Class is definitely growing because of the tech sector. I am black, you will love it. At first though, you will have to get used of really white people because of the grayer days in the winter. This is the mystery of Seattle's weather: A day may interchange between rain, sun and gray. This is only from October to April. Although gray though, the sky is clearer than Southern California. Nuff said. Cheers.

I know that education comes first of course, but I wouldn't mind being around other minorities, (ex: asians, puerto ricans, etc.) especially African-Americans..Reiteraing, can anyone shed some light?

Actually, it was named for William Rufus DeVane King (a slave owner), but then changed to be "renamed" for Dr. Martin Luther King in 1986.

That's so funny, and so true. When I first moved out here 30 yeas ago from the east coast, where I was surrounded by Blacks, Jews, Italians, and Hispanics, it was a little shocking to see just how white white could be.

Shoot, I'm yellow and just yesterday, someone took a picture of me and when I saw it, I said, wow...I need a tan. This place really does suck the color right out of you if you struggle to keep it anyway.

Moving to Washington...
Hello,
I am moving to Washington in Nov/Dec of this year. Have visited Washington once before, but have no idea which areas are the better areas. Need to be relatively close to Allyn, Washington. Have a 15 year old daughter and want her to be able to go to school with black kids, not just all white, she will not like that very much.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help in advance.

I have no idea where Allyn is. Not sure if she will be able to go to school with many black kids there? Also not sure what you mean by the "better" areas...but I don't think your daughter will run into much racism here, even if they are all white kids she goes to school with.
