Every time I go to Seattle I walk so much and dont even realize it. I love that in a place! You would dump the weight in no time. I went to a city back east for under 2 weeks and dropped just over ten lbs just from being able to take a quick bus ride (or not) and then walking around all day. It the best!
I would go for it and take advantage of the healthy lifestyles around you.

I know that education comes first of course, but I wouldn't mind being around other minorities, (ex: asians, puerto ricans, etc.) especially African-Americans..Reiteraing, can anyone shed some light?

Unfortunetly, there are not a lot of African Americans in Seattle. Mostly whites and Chinese. I couldn't stand that part of Seattle. The localites are especially negative around black people. Do your friends live in Seattle? The funny thing about the area is Tacoma is a different world from Seattle. Other cities such as Federal Way are more diverse. Washington has issues, I do not know much about Alabama but they have real issues.

Tacoma may have slightly more (3-4%) African Americans than Seattle but not enough to make it that much more diverse than Seattle. There are "mostly whites" in Tacoma too, singlemother
And there are actually more Blacks than there are Chinese in Seattle.
And what part of the city couldn't you stand to be in? ...the part where there are a lot of "whites and Chinese?" ...exactly what part of the city might that be?
I'd sure like to hear about what "issues" Washington has. I'm tending not to agree at all.

Oh, WA has issues - what state doesn't?
AZ, How do you know that WA is "mostly white and Chinese"? Yes, Seattle has a very high asian population when comparing it to other places... but you do know that all asians aren't Chinese, right?
I would never live in Tacoma OR Federal Way - and absolutely, Seattle is a world away from those two places... but that's to Seattle's credit.

Being a 25 year old black man who was born and raised in the Seattle area I agree that the overall black population here is quite lower than most major cities. However, there is a decent amount of us in places like the Central District, South Seattle, Renton, Kent, and Federal Way. Renton has a good amount of middle class black families living there and is just outside of Seattle. The night life for a young black person may not be as good as other major cities but there are a decent amount of clubs and bars out here that cater to a mostly black crowd. It's just all about meeting people and finding out where to go. There are also a good amount of nice black churches throughout the greater Seattle area. A lot of people may say that South King County is "ghetto" or dangerous, but there are actually a lot of nice places there and a very diverse population. Many of these comments come from those who tend to see minorities in a more negative perspective. Just my 2 cents.

That's quite a generalization.
I wouldn't live in South King County. However, if I could afford it, I would buy a house in the Central District. There are a lot of negative aspects of South Kind County, and I wouldn't say the amount of minorities is one of them.

I understand that not everybody feels that way, but some do. I have lived all over the South King County area in Renton, Kent, and Federal Way. True there may be some downsides but there are many positives also, as with any area. Federal Way aside the commute from Renton and Kent to downtown Seattle is decent, especially if you use the bus or train. The cost of living is much cheaper than anywhere else in King County. There are some very nice houses and apartments in Renton, Kent and Federal Way at decent prices. Just be sure to check out the area and surroundings and everything should be fine. As with any other city you will find areas ranging from rundown to extremely nice. I prefer to live in a city where you have all types of people in terms of class and culture. South King County gives you this diversity.

Being an urban/metro environment, I'm sure the Seattle area has different cultural/ethnic attitudes than the rest of the state. But, be aware that a major factor in the recent influx to rural Western Washington from urban areas in California is driven by the fact that Washington has a low percentage of minorities.
