what part of the midwest? i'm seriously puzzled because i'm from kc,mo and that city is extremely racist. we've had a black mayor but the city is still zoned for housing! most companies are completely white as are most neighborhoods outside of the city and racial profiling is a way of life in the car, at stores and restaurants and at clubs and places of entertainment. and i don't want you to look at me and not notice my skin color because i'm proud of my blackness and i celebrate it. to not see that is to not see me.

All the Black people I met in Washington (been twice, hoping to relocate after I graduate from College) have been nice.
That's not counting the crazy lady screaming into the night from a stoop, and the guy with a garbage bag full of weed.

Some people would see a guy of any color with a garbage bag full of weed as very nice.

If KCMO is still like this, then Seattle would be a better place to live. Hope you're enjoying you time in Seattle.

I need a trim now, and may have to try great clips. I have been growing my hair out, and was scared that a place like great clips would chop it off instead of trim it. At this point I might need to take this risk. This sucks!!
Nevermind, I'm just going to wait until I go to Florida next week.
This might sound crazy, but having a good beauty shop is integral to my livelihood. I found a great places for manis and pedis, though!

You can find a beauty shop in Seattle or Tacoma.
I am convinced that racism and prejudice are going to be found wherever one goes. There is no way you can go to any place and it not be free of it. With that said, there are different things for different people. You know what you are looking for in a place. That is good.
As for me, the things that are important to me are a place where I can go to get coffee(I am a coffee lover), a place where I can surf the internet for free, a nice climate, cold weather is good, a place where I can be myself(You can take a look at my profile), a safe place, lots of ethnic restaurants(everything from Vietnamese to German to Morrocan to all of the ends of the earth), beautiful scenery.
You have your reasons and I have mine. Seattle can be alot of things to many people. My suggestion is to give Seattle a try.

I would ask the same question "what part of the midwest" -
As far as how in or out of place you feel I think it really comes down to a matter of personal preferences. I am black and I lived in Seattle and Tacoma for 1/2 of my life then moved to St.Louis - where I felt culture shock for the 1st time ever - here in st.louis you really sense the racial divide - I never felt that way in Seattle Tacoma - I enjoyed the cultural diversity the Seattle area provides – My husband who is from STL and I are in the process of trying to relocate back to Seattle with in the next 12months – I still have family and friends in Seattle/Tacoma go there about once a year… love it can’t wait to move back…
