The percentage of blacks living in Seattle is almost the same as the percentage of whites living in Detroit.

Hello! I'm a black female who just moved to Seattle from Texas for college. There are definetley more blacks in Texas than here. When I'm walking on the street and I see other blacks I find myself giving them a little nod like "Hey! I'm black too!" All the blacks I have seen so far seem to be very well educated and classy which is what I like to see. I've been here for about a month and I love it, the city is beautiful and exciting, but there is one problem........where can I get my hair done for a reasonable price?? I checked out one place whose relaxers cost $100!! All I need is somewhere within walking distance or a short bus ride from where I am (Capitol Hill), does a good job and is a reasonable price. I also WILL NOT go to a white salon, I refuse to be someones "black experiment". haha. I mean I'm not asking for something dirt cheap but something a poor college student can afford! So if anyone knows of anywhere would you let me know? Just like email me or something or email me if you just want to say Hi, I'd like to get to know some educated, interesting, black seattleites.

As a white man knowing next to nothing about "black salons", I see a lot of them on MLK avenue in the central district/rainier valley. They do not really look high end from the outside, so I can't imagine them being really unreasonably expensive. I don't know the route numbers, but I know there are a couple of routes you can take from capitol hill down to MLK ave. Of course this is just me kinda talking about subjects I know nothing about, so I could be way off.

Just an FYI ...

I know for a fact that the community colleges around here have training salons. I know a girl who went to SCCC's salon and was pretty happy with their services (they also do braiding there, I think).

I just got off the phone with my former boss, an always stylish and hysterically funny African American woman, and asked her where she gets her hair done. She mentioned two places. One is Good Salon @ 19th and Yesler in the Central District, and the other is at the SVI School of Cosmetology,on Capitol Hill, which she said is run by a MS. Valentine, one of the legendary black stylists in Seattle.
SVI - Seattle Vocational Institute - Cosmetology Salon

There aren't many places. I have been doing my own hair, and my family members' hair, since I got here almost two months ago. I don't know how to do a perm though. I think I will take some classes on the side, because I can do hair very well and there is clearly a market for it here.

Even women who do hair out of their homes charge $60+ to do your hair. It should only be $30+. Crazy!!! Men will never understand the importance of a good beauty salon in a woman's life!

I can understand the importance of a beauty salon in a woman's life. Alot of women want to look beautiful and presentable. This is why the women who look for salons look for the salons that cater to their specific needs. This is why alot of black women look for salons that cater mainly to black hair car. There is also a cultural significance to this. The salon is where womem exchange news and meet one another to talk, to bond. It has the same significance as the barber shop for men.

Im A BROWN skin color man. I dont think the problem lies with us, the problem is that some are closed minded. or scared of all things they dont know about. I have plenty of white friends and they do dumb stuff and ignerant things all the time. but no matter what, its not looked at the same. whites know that people of color have been wronged in our so called "free" country since way back when the land was stolen. So it seems they automatically go into guilty mode when they are around people of african decent. Have you noticed that we are trading places now? People of color are educating themselves, buying homes, cars, and investing in thair own bissnesses. and the whites are sagging thair jeans, gang banging, yousing a swagger talk, big rimms on thair cars, becoming drug users and dealers of meth thinking this will make them more atractable to wemen and society. I would be upset too, if who i was to the world was mostly negative. This is why I moved to Lake Stevens Because I am Me But Who Are you? You cant be me too.
