Black Population In Seattle
AS I said in another thread, my friend and I are thinking about appying to the University of washington - Seattle...I heard that Seattle is a very beautiful city, despite the rain; i also heard that the rain isn't as bad as people say it is..I've read through some posts on Seattle on diversity...I' from the South (Alabama to be exact) and I was wondering if there is a nice size of black middle class residents in the area? A couple of blacks that my friend knows who live in Seattle said that they really like it; they work for microsoft...Can nayone shed some light on whether or not teh middle class population in SEattle in increasing and if the size is pretty good for right now? I know that education comes first of course, but I wouldn't mind being around other minorities, (ex: asians, puerto ricans, etc.) especially African-Americans..Reiteraing, can anyone shed some light?

here are the numbers from 2000: Races in Seattle:
White Non-Hispanic (67.9%)
Black (8.4%)
Hispanic (5.3%)
Two or more races (4.5%)
Chinese (3.4%)
Filipino (2.8%)
Other race (2.4%)
Vietnamese (2.1%)
American Indian (2.1%)
Other Asian (1.8%)
Japanese (1.6%)
Korean (0.9%)
Asian Indian (0.5%)
i'm not sure what you're going to get other than speculation about middle class black folks in seattle (percentage wise) other than hearsay.
i'm under 40 and lived nearly 30 years of my life in washington. if your bottom line is: would a black person feel comfortable living in seattle? the answer is not only yes, but heck yes.

Hey WashintonNative! Thanks for responding to my question...I was just wondering about the black population b/c I'm from the South and I'm used to be around a pretty good number of blacks, besides being used to other races as well...What's your opinion on University of wAshington - Seattle and Washington state in Spokane? What are their reputations and so forth? Or anybody else can answer to!!! Any thoughts and/or answers are appreciated

Spokane is one of the whitest cities in the land & very very boring. As you head north you get a lot more diversity. South in Portland OR has quite a bit of diversity and here in Vancouver WA, in all sections of the city, we are finally getting some as well. It is soooo nice. I am from the south also. My daughter is hispanic and this is a welcome site. I think you would love Seattle and have a wonderful time getting your education. Good Luck with Everything!

I love you pwright1. And I mean that in the most heterosexual way, if you're a man. Well, I guess if you're a woman, too.

Hey aupz23, I to am African American and was raised in Seattle. Everything pwright1 said is accurrate and his pictures, as you can see are great. I went to college in Louisiana at an HBCU and can tell you that culturally Seattle and the South are night and day different. So be prepared for culture shock. Anyways, my father works at the UW so if you have any further questions or details send me a private message.
