modest affordable apartments in metro area
I am considering a move to the Seattle metropolitan area, and am looking for something in a one bedroom apartment, that is on the modest, safe and very affordable side (approx. $600/mo). Would somebody identify, by city, apartment name, etc., the best places to find this. I am open to something in Seattle proper, or any place in the suburbs. Does anyone know of any publication (e.g. catalog) that might identify several in this category? Thanks in advance.

I think it is not possible to rent a one bedroom apt. in the Seattle Metro for $600 a month.
If you need an idea of approximate housing costs in the Seattle area, go to craislist rentals, plug in the dollar amount you can pay, and see what is listed. This should be a good barometer for cost.
craigslist: seattle-tacoma classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

My husband had a studio apartment in Fremont (good area, but it was kind of a dump) and it was $695, and that was 5 years ago.

Hi Marcus. The Seattle "metro" area is perhaps more expensive than you expect. However, there are many, many neighborhoods within the limits of the city of Seattle, and many more in close suburbs, and here are three more possibilities for your research.
BTW, this area is pretty safe, one of the gentlest places in the country, I think. There are no crime-infested, violence-infested, or drug-infested areas here. There are areas with more money and areas with less, and that's about it.
NWSource is the combined classifieds of the two leading newspapers in and around the Seattle area. If you click on a place name in the little map, it will drill down to smaller areas, from which you can drill down to neighborhoods, and learn their names and locations:
NWapartments: Seattle apartment rentals, house rental listings, rental classifieds and other property rentals in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue and other Washington areas, cities and neighborhoods
Another resource, Seattle Weekly:
Seattle Classifieds
And The Stranger:
classifieds.thestranger.com | seattle classifieds, employment, rentals, buy sell trade, musicians, escorts
Never ever ever ever send money to anyone, until you verify: 1) they are who they say they are; 2) the property actually is exactly as advertisied; and 3) the person is legally authorized to rent the property.

I moved into my place a month ago and was hard-pressed to find a place that wouldve cost less than $1300 in the metro area. As a matter of fact, we looked at 10 buildings or so and didn't find anything less than the above number. I feel like I'm paying a bit of a premium for our 1 bed + den at $1900 monthly, but that is besides the point. I might rectify that in a year. I think that you should expect a significant drive into town if looking for a $600/month apt. Say, from, Yakima? All jokes aside, this town has a higher cost of living that you'd think. Especially in the real-estate/rental sector. It's alleviated a bit by the fact that there are no state taxes. If that's a saving grace?
I think the best find in town was at 1000 8th ave. Large studios were going for like $950. The building had a few flaws and the staff was as slimy as they come, but this might be a good place to start your search if you are willing to cut corners.
You could also do as others have suggested and go outside of the building management apartments and rent a condo or co-op.
Best of Luck to ya

For that price, you'll be in Lynnwood or Kent.
There is virtually nothing in the city proper for that price ... outside of a room in a housesharing situation.
