....and home prices have fallen significantly more in Southern California than in the Seattle area. I just read somewhere that the median price for a home in San Diego is now lower than Seattle, but evidently San Diego has a much larger area of not good areas that contribute to the median price.

Seattle is a very nice place for a family. It is relatively safe and the city is one of the highest per capita for four year degree holders. However, the weather is horrid and cultural diversity is low. Some people love it here and others hate it, it depends greatly on the individual. The heaviest cons I feel are the weather and the traffic, which is very bad and underrated. The city is quite communal though, and outdoor opportunities are endless. Good luck!

Try San Antonio, Texas. Low housing costs, great sense of community, great schools, good weather, and just a little further than Seattle. My friend has a Nanny for her twins. Lots of Californians are moving here. We've lived in Costa Mesa, CA, but moved to San Antonio for finances and a better way of life, which we found. We are about to move to Seattle because of a job. Wouldn't move otherwise.
