Ahh no! Dont go south of Seattle. You can drive about 10-15 minutes North of Seattle on I-5 to a place like Lynnwood, Edmonds, Shoreline and a few others. These areas are MUCH much nicer than places like Auburn, Kent and Renton. When i think of living in any of those places i have to cringe.

I live in Lynnwood and have for quite a few years now. Within 10 minutes i can get to any sort of shopping i desire and if i want to get to Seattle its just 15 mins on the freeway at the right time of day. There are also decent schools here in this area.

For a 2 bedroom apartment our total monthly expense including, utilities and power is just about 950.00.
There are a ton of apartments for rent in this area. I would really hate to see someone thats moving to WA for the first time end up in a place like Auburn. I think it would ruin WA for you alltogether.
Best of luck to you. I really hope you can find a place up north!

You know, there are some very nice places in Auburn, in Kent, in Renton, in Burien, and lots of other areas in the south. Yes, these places also have some relatively bad areas, but there are plenty of happy people who live in these areas in nice houses, people of all races and economic classes.
Take a walk along the Green River trail in Kent and Auburn, go to the bakery in Kent or eat awesome Greek food there, or great Italian food in Auburn, or go to the wine shop in Renton, or the restored section of Old Burien, and come back and tell us how scared you were. You won't.

I second your post Ira. I live in the Fairwood area of Renton which IMO is a whole lot nicer than some of the recommended areas north, like Shoreline. I wouldn't rule south of Seattle out, although living here you may run into the attitude from those in the northern suburbs that "north is better."

RonMaverick, I'd check out both north and south in your price range and see for yourself where you feel most comfortable. Good luck!

Hmm, so often the "North side" of a city is seen as the "rich" side. How wierd.

LA (Laurel Canyon, Topanga Canyon, Santa Monica)
North Oakland (Mountclair)
North Berkeley (Kensington)
North SF - Sea Cliff, (Marin County)
Santa Rosa - the big ugly development on the North hills (Healdsburg)
Atlanta (Buckhead)
NY, (the small rich people states to the North)
San Jose (Atherton)

Think about which way the river/water flows in those cities and you might figure out why...

Eek! I hope i didnt offend you. The fact is that i have been to most of those places and have lived in Auburn. Its just my own opinion that the North Sound is cleaner, safer and a better place to raise children.

Uh, ok, sure. Ignore the fact that I lived for 8+ years on 32-35k in Kansas City. I wasn't rich, but I got by just fine.
