"Ivar's down on Alaskan Way by Eliott Bay (not gourmet, but a local icon)"

I went to Ivar's Acres of Clams about a year and a half ago and was VERY disappointed. I used to work there back in the 80s so it was especially heartbreaking in that they are trying to be more adventurous with their food but do a very poor job. Everything was cold, the service was poor, etc. It was one of the most disappointing dinners out I've had in the last decade.

I was also somewhat disappointed with Benihana the last time we were there (about two years ago). The couple of times we went to the Palace Kitchen I was underwhelmed. Although TD's coconut cream pie there is the best.

One of my favorites in town is Schwartz Brothers' Chandler's Crab House. We've been there close to 10 times in the past eight years and never had a bad or disappointing meal. Maxamillians in the Market is also very good and more reasonably priced than Campagna. A newer restaurant, Steel Head Diner (also in the market) is good too.

Yeah, it's not really downtown, but Canlis belongs on any list of top Seattle restaurants. Especially if money is no object.

The aforementioned Brazilian place, Ipanema, sounds interesting, even though I'm not much of a carnivore.

My vote is for a day of culinary adventure at Pike Place Market...
walk, eat, walk, drink, walk eat......always fun and located close to Belltown for a late night tour de force of food and wine....yum, then cab back to hotel....easy and TONS of variety.

This will be high on my "to-do" list upon returning to the Emerald City!

I'm anticipating visiting Seattle within the next few months, if not moving out there sometime this year. This thread is awesome as I get to lookup menus from far away places. I'm wondering how you pronounce Canlis? Is it french? like Can-lee maybe? I wish they had more pictures of the decor on their website. When I get a job perhaps I'll celebrate there

I am surprised to hear so much praise for Benihana from the PNW. I've been to a few teppan houses and they seem like a poor quality chain to those in my area of Florida that I currently live in. They're okay, just not anything I would really rate on a top 10 list (unless it was top 10 teppan houses.)

I would ask for the local residents to make a list of where you go out to eat just week to week, not anyplace special. To be able to say When in Rome and eat like you eat would be my goal while travelling out there. Coming from Orlando there are way too many touristy and chain places that are considered "normal" here

Edit: 5chevin5 posted this while I was typing - I dream of visiting Pike's Place. Sounds like the perfect local hangout to get the best and freshest of nearly everything from what I've read!

Canlis is pronounced Can Liss, as if the restaurant had no bathroom.
