So did you move out here? I need a fellow NY'er Transplant to talk to and laugh with. My wife and I made the move 3 weeks ago. Mercer Island, is being over built and rents are dropping. A 1 bedroom last month was 895 now its 695 I can give you the listing if u want. Great place I just wanted a fireplace. No idea why. But I did.
PS my building has a place across the hall for cheap small 2 bedroom. corner unit, view of all of downtown Mercerand Lake Washington. 6 month lease then month to month shortest we found.

...And September is usually a very nice month in these parts. Then it all turns to
rain.

I hope you don't mind my intruding in on your posts, but I'm from the east coast, moving to Seattle in three weeks, my husband is already there since his job started. How do you like it so far? We'll need a place to rent until we can find a home (eventually), other than Mercer Island, any suggestions? Somewhere that commuting downtown won't be too hard and will be ok for our 5 year old? Thanks!

beware of craigslist. There are predators out there. Don't send anyone any money unless you absolutely know they are legit. Good luck on your move

Just moved to NYC, Work in East Harlem (by the triboro)

All of this is to say...what are some recommended areas for us to look for housing? We're looking for a neighborhood with small shops, cafes, and restaurants. Nothing overhyped or too pricey. And since we don't have jobs lined up yet, we'd like to be pretty centrally located.
We're not really aware of what rent is going to cost us, but we'd like to keep it under $1200/month for a one-bedroom (or more). Less money is better!
Any advice?

I would personally go with 1st Hill. 1200 will get you a pretty decent place there, and you are literally a 10 minute walk from downtown (the hub for all the buses). If you are not downtown Seattle is a horrible place to not own a car.

The Issaquah area is where we first rented; specifically the Highlands. Great natural setting with shops, restaurants, etc., very close by. Also easy on/off access to I-90 for trip in/around the Puget Sound and into the Cascades. Redmond is a close second! m
