Default starting new.

Hi. I'm relocating from Ohio to Seattle, WA in June, and I'm eager for some input.

I'm coming to Seattle without a current job, so transferring isn't an option. I'll be getting a job right from the start. This doesn't mean I'm coming without money though. I'll have enough for a deposit, first month's rent, essentials, and part of a second month's rent. This will, most likely, give me some time to get a job.

As for apartments, I hope to find something in or very close to downtown; I'm especially interested in the Lowman Building and Oxford Apartments. I plan to explain the situation [being kicked sent out by a guardian June 1st, therefore utterly relocating,] and possibly have the apartment manager/landlord mail me the application if they think I might qualify.

I'm flying into SeaTac so I will be shipping any of my belongings that won't go with me on my flight. It is imperative that, if I do qualify, I am able to ship my belongings directly to my future home, so that they are there when I arrive. If I can't line up an apartment beforehand, I will have nowhere to put my stuff. I also have a cat; he's very well-behaved, etc.

Hope to hear some helpful info.
:D

I sold most of my belongings and moved to Seattle at the beginning of March 2009 without a job. It took a little over a month to find something through a temp agency. I never got a call for an interview for any of the other positions I applied for. I remained positive though so I would recommend you also maintain a positive attitude during your job search. I had enough cash saved to last three months.

Luckily, I got a call for a position that lasts until October. I'll be leaving for the Navy then. Good timing, huh? Anyway, my point is save as much cash as possible. Also, look into subletting with a roommate until you find a job. I found a nice room w/ a private bath in a house on craigslist at $450 a month.

One last note, prepare yourself for the high cost of groceries in Seattle.

I've lived in the Seattle area for 18 years. Beware of listings on Craigslist. There are a lot of predators out there. Don't send anybody money, I guarantee you will never see it. I don't know what you do for a living, but if you are not a professional with a degree you won't be able to afford to live in any decent place downtown. The last poster was correct, you can rent a room in a private home for 400-500 mo. If you bring your stuff you can gat a 10 x 10 storage place for 100-150/mo. If you don't have a car, public transporatation outside of the city is not great. Why don't you subscribe or web search the Seattle Times Classifieds to see how your plans fit in with the reality of the current economic situation you can use these blogs to ask about particular neighborhoods, etc. This is a great place to live, you made a good choice.
