well, i live in arizona and i've got to say, the sunny days are very nice, but the heat is horrible. talk about being stuck inside all summer! from mid may to end of october it is blazing hot! i have to take my two children to the grocery store very early in the morning b/c it is unbearable trying to get them in and out of the car when it's 110*. the sun burns their baby skin in an instant. of course, november thru april is great! but the summer gets sooo boring and it is hard to find things to do. i'm really hoping my hubby gets transferred to seattle, b/c i love that kind of weather and it looks so beautiful. we are both originally from the midwest, so we would be perfectly fine with the mild winters washington has. and i'm getting pretty tired of the heat. we desperately need a change!

Yes, I do understand you. Why don't you move to California instead?
In Seattle area, winters are chilly, rainy & damp for 6 months, you will get bored with that kind of weather after few weeks. So think before moving.
If you don't like the heat, move to somewhere else that still have sunshine you're used too.

You will probably love Seattle then. I am from Florida, and I know the heat. You can't really go outside and enjoy anything and like you, you want to wait until early in the morning or late afternoon to do anything..unless you just HAVE to..a horrible way to live...and honestly looked forward to light rain and gray skies..and overall COOL temps year round...it does not rain that much as they say and it is light rain and drizzle most of the time..that can be on and off during the day...Winters are not near as cold as out East, believe it or not....You may like it...It is a beautiful place...

It's the hot times of the year where I prefer Seattle. it barely rains in July-Sep and isn't godawful hot nor humid.
Temperatures during the winter may be warmer in Seattle than New York, but the truth is somewhere in between what people are saying.
It's not simply this mild drizzle most of the time in the winter where activities are unaffected. there are hard, nasty rains and wind and there is this raw, cold feeling in Seattle a lot in the winter.
But it isn't always raining, and there are a lot of grey and cool days which are almost pleasant. Winters in Seattle are far less sunny than the New York area. We don't get a lot of those clear, crisp, cold sunny days in Seattle. I find winters in Seattle a little hard to take...wind blowing, rain falling sideways, 38 degrees...Don't get me wrong: Seattle makes up for it in a lot of ways. but don't think you can winter in Seattle to escape bad weather.

You betcha! It's hard to grow things that require a long sunny season ( like watermelons) but many things grow like crazy in Seattle. Rosemary grows like a weed here. broccoli, collards, lettuce, onions, carrots, rhododendrons, tulips, daffodils, blueberries, blackberries ( oy do they grow!), apples, pears, cherries, raspberries, roses etc. Unless you're trying to grow grapefruit and watermelon, Seattle can be a gardeners paradise.
the downsides are that you can't just try to grow any tomato variety, you have to find a variety that ripens in no more than 85 days, and weeds love this place too. I do constant battle with bindweed, the wild morning glory. If I could get even 25 cents a pound for that stuff, I'd be filthy rich.

It is only a few months out of the year for the winter..and not near as cold and bitter as the East...I like the idea of seeing all the seasons, you don't get that in Florida. Being from Florida, I don't need to see the sun everyday anyway..lol!..Enough already..lol!

Ira,
Try Ferti-lome's Weed Free Zone for the wild morning glory. It's expensive, but works extremely well (and fast) on that tenacious stuff.

I agree. In my opinion I actually think winter in New York City is better then Seattle. For starters you are more likely to see sunny days in the winter.
Wet 35-39 degree rain is just not fun. Overall Seattle is much more depressing in the winter time.
