Here is a cool link about Patagonia, fair and with thoughtful input. I just found it after you posed the interesting question.

Im not suprised.
Seattle was a fashionable place for longer than it was a drab hiking gear-as-daily-wear city. The Bauer/REI/Gore-Tex craze was a Boomer trend that will fizzle out and pull the companies down from conglomerates into something more like Filson where they belong.
The up and coming generations are more upscale-oriented, IMO.

How bad does it have to get before companies start shutting down in massive numbers? I have never heard of it getting so bad to where companies are considering calling it quits.

Nonsense. We must always be prepared, just in case we get THE CALL:
"Hey man, you know what we need to do? Kayak then camping, right now. I’m on my way to get you, there is no time to change clothes."

Based on what I see every day on the streets and buses of Seattle, I have concluded that at least half the local population typically has that little North Face logo patch on their rear shoulder.

I hope Eddie Bauer doesn't shut down.

Are you kidding me? You see REI shutting down someday? Most of the people I know in this city get half their wardrobe from REI. We'd all be naked and darn cold in Seattle!

HRmmmm..........Ok.
Eddie Bauer Holdings may seek bankruptcy protection as soon as this week....
The speculation halved the Bellevue company's stock price, which fell 24 cents to close at 24 cents Tuesday.
