I don't know how you could get that it's a "resort life". It's more like a residential area for high-income families and families who want their children to go to good schools. As for, if you want to see a real cultural wasteland, go to any of the south suburbs of Seattle, like Federal Way, Kent, Auburn, Tukwila.

FYI - just go a little further west and you'll find lots of waterfront apartment rentals in the Leschi neighborhood in Seattle. There's a little retail area with a couple of nice restaurants, coffee shops and a very friendly grocer (with an amazing wine selection).

And to the guy who made the comment about anti-Semitism, that's just silly, especially considering that I'm Jewish and I've attended services on Mercer Island in the past. And yes, I've even had Noah's Bagel's.
Thanks for the replies so far!

You'll find that some posters here get their undies in a bunch over the most trivial things. Don't take it too seriously. My experience when living in Seattle was that many, many people were looking to take offense at something.

You are right about taking offense, certain people are overly sensitive to the most innocent suggestion.... and everyone who knows the local demographic knows Mercer Island is, shall we say, not on the list of places that might host the next public discussion about genocide in Palestine. So to say it's devoid of culture, well, you never know when the ADL may get involved in some way shape or form.
