What is Seattle's population? I read that its under a huge BOOM but i can only find the population from 2005. Anyone know or can guess the population for 2007?

Hi Derk. As you know, the official census is taken every 10 years with the last one being in 2000 and the next in 2010. However, many agencies will be able to estimate a population of a given region using sophisticated interpolation techniques. The official 2000 Seattle population is 563,374. It's estimated that the 2006 population is about 580,000. Through the years, Seattle proper's population has gone up and down ever so slightly but bottom line hasn't changed much for decades. It's hourglass figure geographically probably prohibits much land area expansion as the city limit lines haven't changed in years also.

What has changed or has been under a huge "boom" as you put it, is Seattle metropolitan's population which is now right around 4 million and growing. That takes in all the suburbs which surround the city. Many of these suburbs have the ability to expand geographically and have. This allows the increase in population.

I can probably dig up some more specific stats for you if you're curious about the surrounding suburbs and their population explosion in recent years but I don't have them at the tip of my fingers. Let me know.

Thanks, more later.

This was a topic in the Seattle PI last week. Metro area population is 3.3 million, up about 280,000 from 2000. I could be a bit off since I'm doing this from memory, but these numbers are very close. You can probably find the article online.

I can't remember what article I got my figures from but clearly remember it saying that it was close to 4 million ...3.9 I think it was. But again, these are all figures based on different methods of interpolation. And, I'm reading that different agencies use different definitions of exactly what makes up the "metropolitan area." Up 280,000 seems a little low to me but could very well be. I'll try to find the article you're citing. Thanks.

Ok, here's the article and marksind is pretty close.

As I've said, I've seen conflicting reports of what constitutes the "metropolitan" area. This article says that it takes in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties but doesn't specifically mention whether that includes Everett; I'm assuming so but not sure. I've also seen Kitsap county and occasionally Thurston county included in some populations estimates. So who knows what those figures I referenced previously includes but obviously taking in more than the PI article is citing.

These are estimates directly from the U.S. Census Bureau so probably better to use these figures than the ones I previously cited. Thanks, marksind.

Seattle metropolitan area: 3.26 million

Increase since 2000: 219,612 (7.2% increase)

The fastest growing area in the state as a percentage of increase since the year 2000? Tri-Cities with a population of 226,033 with an increase of 34, 208 for a 17.8% increase.

eh, let me just post the chart from the article so everybody can just glance at the figures in one place:

Here's the entire article:
