I don't understand.
Can she not get Medicaid? That is a federally funded program.
WA is one of the worse states in the nation for those with special health care needs. It has the lowest funding pool, and you have to be below the poverty level (very below) to qualify.
SSI shouldn't take 1 to 2 years to "battle". It's actually a pretty quick application. Do you mean that she's been denied once and you are appealing it?
You are very close to Texas, where there is a lower cost of living, and excellent health care. Houston is well known world-wide for it's excellent hospital system. My advice would be to get down to Houston, apply for medicaid and try and rebuild.
Hope this helps some, good luck.

From Oklahoma's medicaid site...
http://204.87.68.21/medapp/medicaideligibility.htm#Blind%20and%20Disabled (broken link)
Blind or Disabled
To be eligible for Medical Benefits in Oklahoma, a disabled person must have a physical or mental impairment, a disease or loss that appears reasonably certain to continue at least 12 months without significant improvement and that substantially impairs his/her ability to perform labor or services or to engage in a useful occupation. Disabled recipients in certain counties may be eligible for SoonerCare.
SoonerCare : http://204.87.68.21/medapp/soonercare.htm (broken link)
One way ticket on Greyhound, from where you are in OK, to Seattle is $110.00 if you book 7 days in advance. And, it's $55 one way to Houston, from where you are.

Thank you for the info. The reason it needs to be Washington is because that is where all of my doctors from birth are. They have one of the best neurologist clinic as well. I cannot get Medicaid nor SoonerCare until I am approved for SSI. Yes it's easy to fill out an application, but unless you are dying soon they will usually not approve you the first couple of times. I have spoke with many people who now receive SSI and they had a 2-3 year battle to get it. I have 23 years of medical proof that I am disabled and I still was not approved twice now and I am awaiting a hearing. When you apply for a hearing you wait 12-18 months before you get a hearing date. It's also easier for a mentally disabled person to get SSI then it is for a physically disabled person.
With me not being able to work and Michael having a hard time trying to get work in this town we can't even come up with our $300 a month expenses let alone anything extra to take a greyhound anywhere. Even if I could take a greyhound somewhere I could not be treated without insurance. In Washington I am able to have full coverage medical insurance because they have proved me disabled for the state and because we are below the poverty level.
We have run out of options so we thought we would try for help from other people via the internet. We live in the poorest county in Oklahoma. There isn't any financial help around here. We aren't trying to get rich off of people, just trying to survive. It's really our last hope. If you aren't in a position to help us then we just ask that you pray. Pray that we can win with SSI, pray that Michael can find a job and pray for us to be able to survive through this.
Thank you,
Tawny

Washington state is very bad with medical malpractice too. If you do have medicaid from my experience, there are limited physicians who will be able to take that coverage - Medicaid limits their rates to their providers.

Which one are you referring to? I have extensive experience with the neurologists through out Western WA.
I have to tell you, through my research, Houston is better.
Regardless of where your doctors from birth are, your medical records will follow you. My son was born in WA and has many medical/development issues - and that hasn't been a concern with our move.

What state program are you talking about? Other than Medicaid, unless you are a minor child - I know of no other program that would have you "proved" as "disabled for the state". If you are disabled, you are disabled - one state doesn'trecognize you as disabled, and another wouldn't... it just doesn't work like that.
Are you talking about the state funded insurance?
I wish you well - but regardless of whether your area is low income or not - there are programs for you, if you are disabled, out there. You have options, other than soliciting people online for money. It just takes some work, phone calls, emailing... advocating for yourself.
Take care.

The insurance I was referring to was the DSHS sponsored health insurance. I had it when I was living up there, and I was in the discussion of surgery before I had to leave.
In reply to calling around for disabled help, there really isn't any available. DHS will pay your electricity once, and we have to use it last month. Sometimes Little Dixie will have help, but it's very rare and since we have needed help there haven't been the funds awarded to the county. Pushmataha county doesn't have any funds to help because we are the poorest county. We have found a few places that will help, but not to our county. You have to live in their county. It's really messed up here and nothing like Washington. If you have any further comments or questions feel free to email me.
