Sounds like you've been there before.

I heard Via Tribunali pizza inside the Crocodile Cafe serves their pizzas for $5 after 11pm. Sounds too good to be true though...

The Rosebud on Pike Street. Most menu items are $2-$4 during their happy hour that goes to 7pm.
Same with the Blarney Stone on 2nd and Stewart if you like bar food.

Not true. I was there 3 years and ran when the opportunity came along and so did some of my co-workers who were there much longer.

Housing prices are pretty high.

Ira you got that right with the holier than thou self righteousness-tends to border on facism.

Seattle reminds me of England.......
Hi
I just spent ten days in the Seattle area (Bothell), and to use the American vernacular, it was 'awesome'. I am also originally from England, and it's strange, but Seattle has also been calling my name for the past ten years. I hadn't been there either until my son moved there last October. I've been twice since then, and I want to move there yesterday! Currently I'm in Phoenix, Arizona, and what a contrast...........coming back to this dry desert after all that 'fresh air' and fresh fish has convinced me that Seattle is where I need to be, so come the summer of 2010, I will be moving!

alright GARFIELD! ~ I was reading this thread thinking 'surely SOMEONE will post about all the good cheap eats here in Seattle.' I'll add to Garfield's list:
Not only Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi) or pho, but also ALL Vietnamese food: check out restaurants like Tamarind Tree & Green Leaf and have the banh xeo (vietnamese crepe) or any of the noodles/grilled meat dishes and you will be in heaven. I swear, Vietnamese is the BEST and most delicious food for the least amount of money.
Also the local taco trucks. great, simple fare for just a few bucks.
Then there's trippy places like Fort St George, a Japanese deli in the International District. Cheap food, tasty and a few things you'd never expect ;-) It's a cult classic.
U-District is king to student cheap eats. Check out Thai Thom's, tiny place, and if Thom's in front of the stove, order your food one star or you'll be sorry.
Go to Pike Place Market and try all the street food there. Gyros, Piroshky, a la Francais... Go to the local Farmer's Markets and there's always someone making up some food there for cheap. There's a farmer's market almost every day of the week in a different neighborhood during the summer.
There are good cheap eats in the city. You just gotta find 'em

Um, I don't really think that's why places like Renton are looked down on (and really, Renton's not so much 'looked down on' as are places like Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond) its really because they lack the sophistication of Seattle proper but act like they ARE sophisticated and because the burbs are... well, the burbs. Lots of families feeding the kids at MickeyD's and not a lot of nice restaurants or good cocktail bars or good places for live music. And some ugly urban planning. Bellevue's Art Museum is in their MALL ferchrissakes.
Anyone who moves here will eventually notice the difference in atmosphere between Seattle & Bellevue. Some prefer one over the other, and ya know what? whatever floats yer boat, darlin'.
For the most part:
Bellevue/Redmond/Kirkland: new, garish, nouveau riche, McMansions, chain restaurants, strip malls.
Seattle: old money, classy, ballet, symphony, old established walking neighborhoods, each with their own little retail districts. Turn of the century homes. Unique locally owned restaurants, high end and low end.
It just depends on which vibe you like.
And ya know what? All of that doesn't mean I hate Bellevue/Kirkland. In fact, Bridle Trails is one of my most favorite spots in the whole area. I myself lease a horse who lives right across from Bridle Trails and I ride there every single weekend. (Bridle Trails State Park is a 500 acre State Park for equestrians and hikers/joggers) ~If you are horsey at ALL, or even into nature at all, BT Park is a treasure! Once you are in there, the rest of the world falls away...
