Bellevue crossroads neighborhood has very cheap rentals ($800 for one bedroom) if you find a job on the East Side. Safety shouldn't be a concern in Bellevue generally.

You can possibly get a 2 bedroom in Marysville for 700-900 but you have to qualify as low income.
However in this area there are lots of restuarant, casino and retail jobs that pay about 8.50-10.00/hr. At that rate if you have kids you could probably qualify. If not, you would be better to look for a roommate situation for about 400-500 mo. Crime is lower when you are north of Everett.
You asked about a studio. It is usually one room with a kitchenette and a bathroom.

I live in the River Valley. Fort Smith, more specifically.

This is what I would suggest: Olympia, Puyallup, Sumner, Marysville, Everett or Bonney Lake. Out of all of these suggestions, I like Olympia the best, for sure. I also like Bellingham, but it is even farther away from the Seattle area.
Good luck!

Um, try somewhere in between Tacoma & Seattle.

I never considered Olympia an area of Seattle. It's far...I was born in raised in the "Seattle area" and I think I've been to Olympia twice. That is more like moving to 'Washington state' than 'Seattle'.

You wouldn't want to commute from Seattle to Olympia daily, but it is only (without traffic) an hour away (60 miles) which is similar (timewise) to Puyallup, Monroe or Marysville to Seattle. But those are all pretty far out too.

I bought a large condo in the Lake City area that cost me as much as a small closet sized place would be in Belltown. I sold my car and get around very easy without one.
I have a city library, shops, restaurants and bars around me and a bus ride (#522) to downtown is only 22 minutes.
I'm still in the city but paying suburban prices and am very very happy!
