Single Black women thinking of relocating to Washington
I'm a single, 30 yr old, mother of an 8 yr old who is looking to possibly relocate to Washington State. I'm hoping to land a staff position at one of the local universities and live the happy life. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what cities my son and I could live. I currently live in Baltimore, MD and I'm dying for a change. I have no desire to move down south or even stay on the east coast. I am not the least bit religious, pretty liberal, I love beautiful scenery and reading. Nonetheless, I'm single and I'd love to move where there could be a chance for me to meet single guys (no racial preference). I'm looking to find an area that is not too far from Seattle, nice schools, reasonable housing and low crime. Don't get me wrong, I love all races as long as there is no racial tension. However, I'd like to settle in a decent area where I have the possibility of seeing a few black faces. Please give me any suggestions or feedback you may have because I'm planning to visit in the next few months.

I can only speak for the city itself, but I find West Seattle is quite diverse and more affordable than other parts of the city. There are areas that are questionable, particularly as you head towards White Center, but my little neck of the woods is a good mix. I'm not sure but I suspect that our COL is significantly higher than Baltimore. Definately do your research. Good Luck!

Well I live in the north and I'm seeing more black faces ( mostly African though) I would try the Renton area. If you plan on working at the UW,Seattle U etc why not try the Central District? This way you would be closer either one yet still be near the city. Feel free to PM me with any particular questions.
Quest4beauty, I am also a single black female, mother of two, recently divorced and considering the Seattle are to relocate. I am currently in Charlotte, NC and dying for a change as well. Just curious if you've made the move yet? If so, how would you describe your area? I'm interested in finding out more about the schools and affordable housing in a low crime area. Of course, I'm also curious about the dating scene. Please provide feedback about your experience. Thanks.

Your biggest challenges are seemingly twofold. Seattle itself is roughly 9% African American. As you move to the majority of the suburbs, those numbers decline. The biggest issue is the cost of living, driven in large part by housing costs. Housing is pricey, so be sure to do your homework there.
The school system in Seattle is hit and miss. The better schools "tend" to be in the more affluent neighborhoods as you'd expect. But there certainly are some exceptions. Lowell Elementary, Washington Middle School (Renowned Music Program feeds into the Nationally acclaimed Garfield Jazz Band) and Garfield High School are all APP (Seattle's Highly Capable Program, particular, the top 1%)
Test scores for the Seattle schools, as well as suburbs are located here.
