I'm a single, 30 yr old, mother of an 8 yr old who is looking to possibly relocate to Washington State. I'm hoping to land a staff position at one of the local universities and live the happy life. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what cities my son and I could live. I currently live in Baltimore, MD and I'm dying for a change. I have no desire to move down south or even stay on the east coast. I am not the least bit religious, pretty liberal, I love beautiful scenery and reading. Nonetheless, I'm single and I'd love to move where there could be a chance for me to meet single guys (no racial preference). I'm looking to find an area that is not too far from Seattle, nice schools, reasonable housing and low crime. Don't get me wrong, I love all races as long as there is no racial tension. However, I'd like to settle in a decent area where I have the possibility of seeing a few black faces. Please give me any suggestions or feedback you may have because I'm planning to visit in the next few months.

I can only speak for the city itself, but I find West Seattle is quite diverse and more affordable than other parts of the city. There are areas that are questionable, particularly as you head towards White Center, but my little neck of the woods is a good mix. I'm not sure but I suspect that our COL is significantly higher than Baltimore. Definately do your research. Good Luck!

Well I live in the north and I'm seeing more black faces ( mostly African though) I would try the Renton area. If you plan on working at the UW,Seattle U etc why not try the Central District? This way you would be closer either one yet still be near the city. Feel free to PM me with any particular questions.

Quest4beauty, I am also a single black female, mother of two, recently divorced and considering the Seattle are to relocate. I am currently in Charlotte, NC and dying for a change as well. Just curious if you've made the move yet? If so, how would you describe your area? I'm interested in finding out more about the schools and affordable housing in a low crime area. Of course, I'm also curious about the dating scene. Please provide feedback about your experience. Thanks.

Your biggest challenges are seemingly twofold. Seattle itself is roughly 9% African American. As you move to the majority of the suburbs, those numbers decline. The biggest issue is the cost of living, driven in large part by housing costs. Housing is pricey, so be sure to do your homework there.

The school system in Seattle is hit and miss. The better schools "tend" to be in the more affluent neighborhoods as you'd expect. But there certainly are some exceptions. Lowell Elementary, Washington Middle School (Renowned Music Program feeds into the Nationally acclaimed Garfield Jazz Band) and Garfield High School are all APP (Seattle's Highly Capable Program, particular, the top 1%)

Test scores for the Seattle schools, as well as suburbs are located here.

Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction

You can compare schools side by side at the site. I found it quite useful when my girls went to School in Seattle.

Good luck to you.

I have no idea what Seattle would be like for an African American woman for dating. Or living for that matter.

Good luck on your search.

I lived in Vancouver, Washington for several months. There was minimum to nill racial diversity there however, I NEVER felt any racial tension nor did I feel like an outsider ANYWHERE in the state of Washington.I was hit on by White men frequently. They see race differently there. I was raised in Connecticut, went to college in Virginia and spent my summers in Florence, South Carolinia from 1-16 years old so I know racial tension. I was married to a man from Ghana for10 years and now I am engaged to a While American Male and I have very close friends of all races. I travel throughout the world for work, so I I am well versed in Diversity. I know when Black people are not wanted in a particular area. Washington State was amazing. I am returning to the area this with my fiancé for work while he is off for the summer. You have your good and bad 'folks" everywhere, but the West coast, especially Washington State, was accepting of diversity....Good Luck to you.

Traditionally, the Central District (Jimi Hendrix's home) and Columbia City were areas where many of the African Americans in Seattle lived. These days, they seem to be migrating to SE King County, Renton and Kent.

Really though, the Seattle area is pretty color blind and interracial coupling is common. You could live just about anywhere and be happy. I think for "in-town", Columbia City would feel the best for you, great part of town, very vibrant and diverse (not just African Americans but Ethiopians, Phillippinos, all kinds of people). I once heard it said that it is the most diverse zip code in America.

I have a good friend here who is black and married to a white Norwegian man as well as acquaintances who are in interracial relationships. Nobody really cares.
