True. However, even the police website points out the fact that greater than 70% of rapes are committed by someone known to the victim. I'd be willing to bet assaults fall into about the same categorical statistic.. (coincidentally, of course)
I could be way off base here.. but i really doubt it.

Table 6 - Crime in the United States 2007
Number of crimes per 100K people for 2007.
Lexington-Fayette MSA
Murder 4.5
Rape 35.3
Robbery 144
Agg Assault 284.8
Seattle (if you extract the city data from the MSA)
Murder 4.1
Rape 15.4
Robbery 260.1
Agg Assault 347.1
Overall close in many areas. However, extract out Lexington city data and it's higher than in Seattle for murder, rape and agg assault.

You guys are crazy. You can't judge a neighborhood by its looks. Don't be shallow. Many east coast towns may look rough, but the media blows it way out of proportion. And Seattle may look mostly nice, but you don't have to look far to see its ghettos. My girlfriend had her car broken into recently in Seattle. I grew up in Detroit and never had my car broken into. Don't let the news media fool you. Seattle isn't much better than any other big city. You'll find ghettos in Beacon Hill and along Rainer Ave South in Seattle. A coworker of mine had her purse stolen in downtown Seattle recently. I'm not impressed by all the hype that Seattle is so much better than other cities. People in Seattle are just stuck up and full of themselves, that's all. Get real.

I just want to add the CD (Central District). Although not as bad as it was when I was growing up, there are still many issues and, in my opinion, one of the worst areas of Seattle to live in. Just last Halloween, there was a driveby at Garfield Community Center that killed a young man who's aunt acutally goes to my dad's church a few blocks away. The only part of Seattle that I like living is most parts of Beacon Hill and some parts of West Seattle (not around White Center though).
When talking about OUTSIDE of Seattle, I have always lived south - Renton or Kent (which you is a lot cheaper to live - you definately get more for your money the further south you go). I've never lived north of Seattle, but I know people who live in Everett or Lynnwood - they seem to think it's ok. Not sure if it's cheaper or more expensive than Seattle though.
Good Luck!
