My wife and I are looking at selling our home and relocating to a 1 or 2 BR apartment in Seattle. We have no kids living at home, so schools aren't an issue. What would be ideal would be an apartment where we could walk to movie theaters, restaurants, and markets. Obviously, I know we'll pay a premium to live near these conveniences, but that's OK with us. We're planning on coming out for a visit in a few weeks, but would like to get an idea of where to start looking. I've read a lot about Lower Queen Anne, Ballard and Fremont, so those are definitely on our "must-visit" list. Would these areas be better or worse than living right downtown in terms of "walkability"?

Look at downtown Bellevue. Good theaters, good restaurants, good stores.

I don't live in Seattle (yet), but there's a website that supposedly gives information on how 'walkable' places are.

You should probably add Capitol Hill, Wallingford, and the Admiral and Alaska Junction neighborhoods of West Seattle to the mix. I personally would not prefer to live in downtown Seattle.
Yeah, it has the market, theatres, and restaurants, but my preference would live in a place a little greener, a few more trees and grassy stretches. But other people love living in downtown Seattle. Just a little too gritty for my taste.

We're a couple with no kids, no car and who needed a very walkable neighborhood with great access to public transportation and shopping. We settled on the eastern edge of Capitol Hill and are still extremely happy with our decision after a year and a half of living here. Granted we wanted a house with land and trees, not a condo or apartment, and like Ira said a bit less gritty than Belltown for example.
