I've been looking into the Universities here in the Seattle area for a while, and right now, I can't decide which one to attend; University of Washington or University of Seattle. Have any of you attended/graduated from one of these universities? If so, what are the pros and cons of each? I hope to make a decision before October ends, because I'm sure that classes are getting full quickly as we speak, so I'm trying to waste as little time as possible. Thanks.

University of Seattle? Do you mean Seattle University?

I went to the UW. It's great if you're into that type of university (large, public, Ph.D-granting, research-oriented, Pac-10 athletic conference, heavily recruited students).

I hear good things about Seattle University, but it's main con is that it's private, meaning that a year's tuition, room and all, will be around $38k/year as opposed to UW's 16k/year (subtract about 9k from each if you plan on staying with your parents). If you're applying from out-of-state, however, UW's price tag is essentially equal to SU's.

SU being private also means that there's a more close-knit networking system, and you'll find yourself getting more individualized attention in your classes (intro classes at UW, on the other hand, could be several hundred students large in a big audience hall). And if you want a heavy sports presence, well, you won't find it at SU.

I go to Udub and love it. I'm a little confused though, are you saying you want to come to college this year? It's a little late for that since the year has already started...

Well we're in fall quarter right now. Most full time students attend fall + winter + spring quarters but I guess it might be technically possible to enroll starting in spring. I don't really know.

Seattle University and the UW are both great schools. I personally think that Seattle U is a slightly better school in that they can be a bit more picky in the students that they accept and their focus is entirely on academics. I think the UW spends a little too much time on professor's research projects and the holy athletics department. The UW school of nursing is outstanding, but Seattle U's school of nursing is even better.

You get what you pay for.

You don't even have to send in an application until January! Why don't you wait to see what schools you get into and what kind of financial aid and scholarships you get before making a decision. There's no need to rush. Believe me, no classes for next fall are getting "full" yet.

If you want to do a PhD in science (biology, engineering, etc) after your undergrad, then it is very important that go to a research university such as UW because you will have better resources and get more support.

If you will be living and having a career outside of Pacific NW, then UW probably will be better since Seattle U is not as well known, so that UW can probably open more doors for you.

An important thing is make sure you visit the campuses, and even ask to sit in a few classes. This way you can easily tell which you like better. Keep this in mind.

Of course this is the way to go if you're coming out of high school. For some reason I got the impression the OP was older since (s)he was asking about joining spring quarter.

Well, they're in the process of going to Division I for their sports teams, and the Men's Basketball team will be playing all home games at KeyArena, so I really wouldn't think that's the case anymore.
