school lottery
We are considering a move to the Bellevue/Redmond area. I have heard that you have a lottery for schools there - which concerns me. I have 3 kids - could they end up in 3 different schools?

I have gotten some great responses here in regard to schools. From what I understand it is the Seattle Public School district that used the lottery system, not outlying areas such as Bellevue. However, it appears that SPS is doing away with the lottery system starting next year (2010/2011 school year). Others here can give you more info on that process if you need it.

If you live in Bellevue, your children would be in the same elementary, middle or high school based upon your address within the Bellevue School District. Students are not in different schools. It's all based upon your address for each elementary, middle and HS. They will also allow enrollment into Medina Elementary's "Enrichment Program" for students not within the Medina School district because of the program they offer. Students must be tested and accepted into the "Enrichment Program" to attend that particular elementary school. I could be wrong but most of the Bellevue School Districts enrollments are usually closed for the most part due to the high enrollment rates but again I'm not 100% certain. They were always closed for the schools my kids attended in Bellevue. The only lottery system I am aware of is for the International School located in Bellevue which is a 5th-12 grade school that they do a lottery for every year. Good luck getting into that school. Very high demand with very few spots available. The International School has a rep for having a strong academic program but I cannot imagine be any stronger than Bellevue HS which is rather intense. Seattle schools may have a totally different system in place but in Bellevue and Redmond, all your children would be in the same school if for example they were in grades K-5. Bellevue's elementary is K-5, middle school is 6-8 and high school is 9-12 so if you had one elementary age and one middle school age, that would be the only reason they would be in different schools. Redmond might vary slightly with the grades with a junior high being 7-9 but not sure. The east side has the best school districts in the state, however, I could not comment on Seattle because I don't know anything about them. Good luck!

Unfortunately I don't know about Seattle schools but I would find it really hard to believe that your children would be in all different schools, unless there were of varying ages/grades. Here is the Seattle Public School website. Maybe you can find your answer. Seattle Public Schools*|*Welcome

Actually it is still possible that your kids will be in different schools in SPS next year (even if they are all elementary aged) or maybe even the year after as the kids who are there now are grandfathered in to stay until they matriculate elsewhere even if their assignment is not there. So if your assigned school is "full" you could potentially be reassigned. That could depend on grade levels, etc. There is an FAQ on the SPS website that tells all about it.
