Hi everyone,

My fiance and I currently live in NYC and although we've loved the last few years we've been here, we are ready for a change. We are looking for a city that's cheaper, less crowded, and has more space - BUT still has the overall city life, culture, great food options, variety of things to do, and possible job prospects for us. Seattle came to our minds and looking at the beautiful photos of your city, we are very interested in making a visit ASAP and possibly making our move!

We have a few questions that I hope you can help us with.

1) What are the finance/asset management/hedge fund job prospects in Seattle? We get the impression there aren't too many? We both work in the investments industry and our company does have an office in Seattle, but we are interested in other job options, if there are any.

2) What do locals do for fun? What are some great fine dining options in Seattle? (I did a quick Google search and saw Herbfarm, which looks amazing.) I've grown up in various cities around the world and I LOVE having a variety of great food to eat and things to do.

3) Is it possible to rent an apartment/condo/house with a yard? If so, where and how much? We are interested in getting a dog since we'll finally have enough space!

Thanks in advance for all of your help! It is greatly appreciated.

1) Dunno
2) Outsdoorsy stuff is popular: Hiking, kayaking, sailing, biking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, mountain climbing, skiing, etc. etc.
Restaurants: Tons of good ones sprinkled throughout the city. I like using Urban Spoon when looking for a nice place.
3) Yes, in most neighborhoods that aren't near downtown you should be able to find a house for rent that allows pets. Prices vary wildly by neighborhood.

Coming from NYC, Seattle is gonna seem small. A lot of people think this is a good thing. Just something to keep in mind.

Item #1 is not intimidating. It's not an sector I'm familiar with so can't comment.

#2 ditto with Seattlenextyear. There is also farmers markets in various neighborhoods (as well as Pike Place), clubs & breweries, sports venues (Seahawks, Mariners), Alki for the beach, and live theater.

#3 I haven't rented in over five years so I can't comment, but I understand that right now, it's cheaper to rent than make a mortgage payment (though others here could answer better than me).

Even in neighborhoods quite close to downtown Seattle, like North Beacon Hill or Capitol Hill there are houses for rent with yards. And as rmkiefer07 stated, rents are far less expensive at this time than mortgage payments.

As you probably know, San Francisco has more asset management jobs than Seattle does. Russell Investments' upcoming move up I-5 to downtown Seattle should create some opportunities, however.
