I would not live in West Seattle or Columbia City if you are looking to be close to UW.

Driving from Ravenna to DT Seattle (with no traffic) would only take a few minutes, just crossing over the bridge. So with the Buses (and their multiple stops) we're talking about less than 20 minute trip.

Ravenna is something like a 10 ish minute drive from downtown if the traffic gods are co-operating, but rarely over a 25 minute drive, with decent bus service to downtown. If you had a job somewhere near the University it would be easy shmeesy, but even going downtown it wouldn't be hard.
Wallingford is another neighborhood near the University that's pleasant.
The Eastlake neighborhood is quick to both the University and downtown, also a nice area.
