Looked at 2 places. The homes themselves look nice, but driving around I felt like the downtown Des Moines is quite old and lots of not so nice buildings.

One place has secure parking and the other has unsecured parking. How safe it is to park outside infront of the house in this area? Thanks.

I agree. Des Moines, especially by the waterfront, is pretty safe. Yes, downtown Des Moines is older. Personally, I think that adds to it's charm. I don't think the age of a neighborhood has anything to do with how safe it is.

I live within 2 miles of the marina and across the street from the fire dept and 3 min from the police station. My car has been broken into 3 times (GPS has been stolen). FBI has been to my complex at least twice looking for bad guys that are hiding out here, prostitutes from pac hwy have been caught here and on occasion you can here gun shots from the apts across from us (i live in seawind condominiums-blah). There has been one murder in a little white duplex next to us, where my wife and I used to take evening walks. It was one relative (mexican) who decided to shoot his cousin in the head, my wife and i saw the incident and reported it.
